Hello gentlemen, I have read many informative articles here, and I have just finished redoing my Th2004R for use in my 66' Chevy II, sorry no Buick here. I have used several top components from PTS,CK,TPI,Alto, and Sonnax, having learned all I needed to know, so I thought, from this site to do it right the first time, Thanks! My problem is only that I am stuck at the point of using the Universal TV Cable I bought, to start how do I set the correct cable length as it is extra long, as in where is the TV plunger lever when I'm at idle, being this is a brand new set-up I need to make the cable the proper length to even start. Due to this universal cable housing it does not rachet out like the OEM units it has a push-in lock, so I guess I'm asking what may seem simple to some but I can't get my head around it , STUCK!

Thanks in advance.
Chris.

First do you have the correct geometry on your throttle arm?
Like this, it's for a 700 but the geometry is the same.

At idle the lever should be just starting to push on the plunger & at WOT it should have the plunger fully depresed,(cable tight) but it only works that way with the correct geometry.

It sounds like you have the pan off so you can see what's going on, if not you can feel the lever contact the plunger when you pull the cable.

Hi Jim,
Yes I have the correct geometry braket, and yes the pan is off and I can feel the lever hit the end of the pluger when I pull the cable, is it at that point that I secure the cable length, as I am at idle position,(engine is not ready, exhaust missing, to start yet) and the cable housing is in a fully retracted position????

Chris.

That should put you in the ballpark. Will you have some adjustment to the cable after you secure the cable end?

I guess I don't know what your cable looks like.

Jim

Well, I have a picture saved to my desktop of the cable, but I can't figure out how to get it here! That would help with my descriptions of the cable housing adjuster. Any help with that?
I totally understand the set-up procedure and the after effects relative to the OEM set-up with the racheting cable housing, in respect to where the plunger is after this procedure is performed properly. But, (there's always a BUT) with this NON-Rachet cable universal housing how do I determine where this position is going to be? It must have something to do with pressure, as relative to where the plunger is when it returns to idle from wide open!??

I have a 300psi gauge hooked op to the service pressure port, I just am not able to run things yet, but once I do I need to know what I'm looking for as in pressure changes, as the TV pluger is actuated by the throttle position.
(OH the brain is hurting!)

Chris,

Yeah Jim,

I have been through that site and no I dont have their system, but they do give a sort of set-up procedure for the universal cable housing I have, but it is a little confusing in that it assumes you have their system with the cable length predetermined, which is what I was having the problem with, (you helped clear that up,Thxs)
Now with the inner cable length secured it is the outer housing cable adjustment that I most confused about, they describe using the pressure gauge and determining it's position with the rise and fall of pressure while moving the outer cable, so I guess the only question is if this type of set-up has been experienced/performed by someone here that may be able to shed some (if any) small missing details.

Thanks in advance.
Chris.

Chris,
I just adjusted the TV cable on my car today. I installed a 0-300 psi gauge at the test port. At idle, the gauge read 65psi, with an instant response on the pressure gauge as soon as I touched the gas pedal.

At cruise (4th gear) the gauge read about 100 psi. During acceleration the pressure reading would peak as high as 200 psi.

Now, I am no tranny expert by any means. Hopefully someone who is will let us know if these readings are correct/ in the ball park.

Hope that helps.
