I am a longtime owner of a 85 GN but just started to restore it. I am going to replace the braided uppipe coming from the turbo and was wondering how hard it is to take off. It looks to me like there are just a few bolts and it does not look too difficult. Is there any kind of gasket or any other parts I need to replace this pipe? My original one the braiding is frayed badly and I am trying to restore the engine to its original appearance. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance for the help.

Studs

I can't thinks of any problems you might have. Both ends(turbo & header) have studs and they many come out with the nuts. There is a metalgasket next to the turbo and sometimes one of the ears will break off or it will crack. Look it over for cracks.

as far as problems....worst i even encountered was stuck bolts/studs...lol...if that is a problem, then I shouldnt be a shop teacher!!! three studs are on the turbo, with three nuts holding the top pipe...spray them real good with liquid wrench or pb blaster....... bactk them off first, but dont take them off all the way yet.... the bottom two bolts on the header are spring loaded to maintain the grip to the manifold, and keep sealed...some people dont learn to keep things lubricated...spray the heck out of these, unless you wanna spend 8-12 dollars each for new ones!!!! spray them down with the wd 40/liquid wrench/pb blaster...let it sit for a few min, then take them out all the way....once those are off, take the top ones off all the way and you are done! up-pipe off, new one on! check the gasket real closely....like you were told before, sometimes the ear's are cracked, or chipped off...if they are, they can still be used, but try your damndest to find a new one!!! they are difficult to find, but when adding an aftermarket pipe like the poston unit, you will need it for sure!!! There should be no gasket on the manifold...just the pipe....hope this helps a little!!!

Thanks guys, I put the new stock uppipe on last night with no problems. Now I just have to figure out a way to replace my downpipe without tearing out my whole exhaust. The person who had the car before me welded the exhaust to the end of the downpipe . The downpipe I have has a 4 bolt plate attached. Oh well, that is what winter is for....projects.
