hey guys

I have another cam and set of lifters in another motor sitting here in my garage. Can i simply install that cam in my other motor and keep the lifters with that lobe on the cam and everything be ok? or should i just go buy new lifters and be done with it.

TIA

If its a flat tappet cam, you must place the matching lifter to the matching cam lobe. It wouldn't hurt to swirl scuff the bottom of the lifter with some 600# grit wet sandpaper to break the shiny surface on the bottom of the lifter. This helps the lifter to rotate on start up and keeps oil on the bottom of the lifter.

If its a cast roller i would still try to match the lifter to lobe. I don't think its as critical if its a billet roller.

I wouldn't use a used cam if it was me, unless it was a roller cam.

A new flat tappet cam and lifters can be bought for around $200.00 and there will be less risk in wiping a lobe and taking out your engine in the process and costing alot more money to have it rebuilt or gone through to clean it out.

As bad as these engines are with wiping cams why take the risk.

I would tend to think that a used cam & lifters that are broke in together & have some miles would have a better chance of surviving than new ones where you have to do everything just right as not to wipe a lobe. For what its worth I freshened up my motor last winter & re-used the 7 year old cam and lifters.
