I know some of you like this oil due to it still having the zinc content.

Would you prefer this oil over any brand of synthetic oil? Even if you had a bottle of zinc content to put in?

Do they sell any viscosities other than 20W-50 for the VR-1 line? Because that's all I could find.
 
depends on the clearances in the motor. val vr1 is available in 10w30 from napa

Don't get confused with the off-the-shelf VR1 Racing oil. The off-the-shelf does not contain the correct zinc for old cars.

You need the special order VR1 Racing oil, ordered through NAPA. The bottle will say "NOT STREET LEGAL". Yes, it comes in synthetic and conventional, and they both have different grades.

You need the special order VR1 Racing oil, ordered through NAPA. The bottle will say "NOT STREET LEGAL". Yes, it comes in synthetic and conventional, and they both have different grades.

Hey Billy, do you have a part # handy? So I can tell NAPA exactly what I want?

Also wouldn't a turbo car typically be better off on synthetic oil? Or does it not matter?
 
I thought I read that the Race only version had no detergents in it. If this is ture then you would want to change oil regularly.
 
gnxtc the oil your looking at is for track use only. if he uses that he will lunch his motor. the street version has plenty of the zddp for our engines and contains the proper detergents needed for a street driven car. check out the info on the valvoline site and they will tell you that the race only is not for street use. read on what they say about the off the shelf version that's what 87regal should be using. believe me, i'm not tring to contradict you , i don't want to see the guy lose his motor.
 
I read it and they contradict themselves. I don't see how the EPA will would allow them to increase the amount of zinc/phosphorus and be sold as a stock shelf oil. :confused: :confused: :confused: Today the oil is type "SM" and it must meet the chemical make up.

I've been running the off road stuff. Yes, I change my oil often and my car is not a daily driver. I change my oil due to it sitting and before a major Buick race.

my guess is that because they list it as a race oil that they get by the epa. it is made for cars that are more street then strip. the oil you use is for flat out race cars, which sounds like what you've got going on over there. 87regal seems to be more of a daily driver ,but the decision is up to him
 
Not to discourage this thread and it's direction, but there is lots of good info on this site/forum on this very same subject under GM EOS, EOS, Richard Clark's ZDDP plus, ZDDP, and various different brands & weights of oils. Most or all race oils contain very little or no detergents. Any oil that still has enough ZDDP in it for our cars today won't have by tomorrow. HTH.
 
I've used both the off road Racing Oil, and the regular VR1 racing oil in my GN.

About 5K miles a year in a 3 season driver.

No issues at all with Valvoline in about 20K miles I've used it in this car.

I change it and the filter at around 3K miles.

Never seen a sludged up Turbo Buick motor that was driven regularly, regardless of what type oil used.

You don't need additives with that oil.
 
Let me get this straight. I just ordered some Valvoline VR1 racing oil from jegs. Is this the right oil for my engine? It says it has ZDDP in it. Gettin kinda confused with all thes posts.:confused:
 
Napa can next-day order it for you.

Just to set the story straight.

The EPA has not mandated a change in the chemical additive (namley ZDDP) content in regular motor oil.
It is the oil companies response (with auto makers prompting) to the EPAs mandate that the auto manufacturers have to warranty catalytic converters for more than 130,000 miles(IIRC).
And the use of ZDDP in oil made it difficult to reach that objective.

That may have used to be the case, but if you look at both of these product bulletins, one is the VR1 off the shelf and the other is the "not street legal" stuff. The off the shelf VR1 has more zinc now than the "race" stuff, plus the detergents for daily use.
