I've used both the off road Racing Oil, and the regular VR1 racing oil in my GN.

About 5K miles a year in a 3 season driver.

No issues at all with Valvoline in about 20K miles I've used it in this car.

I change it and the filter at around 3K miles.

Never seen a sludged up Turbo Buick motor that was driven regularly, regardless of what type oil used.

You don't need additives with that oil.

Indeed. This is a great oil. Bruce used to use it all the time as well, swore by it. I also used to use it my Buicks before I went to RP

If your having to order oil, you might want to check into Brad Penn. You'll be hard pressed to find a dino oil any better. Very impressive stuff.

Roller cams as far as I know don't need ZDDP. Its the flat tappet cams you gotta worry about like the factory setup.

I use the "off the shelf" VR1 20W50 found at Autozone. I like it because my roller cam valvetrane is very quiet with this oil. And no issues with the oil over the past 3 years. Certainly no sludge problems.

Was your valvetrane noisy before using this oil? Mine is kinda noisy now, i'd like to quiet it down.

The Valvoline VR1 is by far the quietest. I've tried a few others including some synthetics and they sounded clickety tickety.

Jimmy from Jimmy's transmission told me he liked valvoline for the same reason.

Thanks,
I'll give it a try when i'm done breaking in.

OK guys, I e-mail Valvoline tech line what's the difference between the VR1 and Not Street Legal oil. Here is their reply:

We only offer two racing oil lines. One is the VR1 which is recommended for street or strip applications. The other is called Not Street Legal Racing oil. This oil contains less detergents and is intended to be replaced with in 500 miles tops. The NSL contain more ZDDP content than the VR1 by 100ppm's. The VR1 has a much stronger detergent package and has a service interval of 3 months or 3,000 miles. Hopefully this clears up any confusion. Thanks for choosing Valvoline!

I just wonder if the "street legal" version has enough zinc for flat tappet cams.....?

Can't answer you but I believe the Brad Penn oil does.

I searched for some oil analysis for the "Not Street Legal" and seen it around the 1100 ppm range. So according to Valvoline, the VR1 stuff is 100 ppm less.

Click on the Zinc/Phosphorus side bar of the Brad Penn site for more info.
Penn Grade 1 Racing Oil (Scroll down and read the last few paragraphs)

I used up my Valvoline NSL oil, going to try the Brad Penn oil next.

I know some of you like this oil due to it still having the zinc content.

Would you prefer this oil over any brand of synthetic oil? Even if you had a bottle of zinc content to put in?

Do they sell any viscosities other than 20W-50 for the VR-1 line? Because that's all I could find.

Back on track

I'm using it now and have to say its a bit smoother running. I went from 10w-30 to 20w-50 VR1. There is a little less noise, but it might just be me.
