Visual Inspection Question

Just curious... When the oil pan is dropped and I am replacing the rear main seal, I like to check everything else down there. Besides the obvoius, ie: broken or cracked stuff, is there anything in particular that should be done to inspect the bottom end? For example is there a trick to inspecting bearings , etc?

Looking for guidance from the engine experts here...
