I have a module (wastegate module maybe???) on the passenger side valve cover with a missing hose. pic attached. The hose that is attached goes to a Y with one leg that goes to the output side of the turbo and the other to what I think controls the wastegate. I am not sure if the module is supposed to be like this or if there should be two hoses. If two hoses, where doe

s the second one go?

The second pic shows the front of the turbo with the heat shield off. I tried moving the actuator rod (arrow) but it doesn't move at all. Is this normal? if not, any ideas what I should do?

Sorry if this looks weird. first time trying to insert pics. tried to correct but as you can see, it didn't work.

#1 that port has a foam little filter over it from factory ,,leave it open
#2 the gate is supposed to move toward the fender to open to regulate the boost,
take the arm off and see if it moves

#3 ...#1 and #2 don't mater without an intercooler

Thanks pacecarta. I have the intercooler off to clean it. I will take the arm off and try your suggestion. If it's seized, then any ideas?

#4 Take that fram filter off and throw it as far as you can. Walk over to where it landed and and throw it again. Replace with a Wix or Baldwin.

The WG actuator takes a bit of force to move it. As they said, disconnect it from the turbo flapper and pull towards the PS fender with some force and it should move.

Ha Ha wonderful response. I just got the car last Thursday Amiga. It was my uncle's and it has been in his garage since 2002. I am just going through the "Spring Cleaning" and more. You guys have been a great help. It'll probably be a month or so before I try to fire it up and the oil filter is just one thing that will get tossed along the way. Thanks for the chuckle.

I will give it a go tomorrow if there is a let up in the rain. Good to know it takes some force to move it. Thanks once again.

the puck should swing freely with the rod off
If it is seized, is it difficult to pull the turbo apart. The turbine and center housings are pretty rusted so I thought I would clean them up and VHT them. Any thoughts regarding what to watch for with disassembly and reassembly?

The wastegate is in the downpipe. you just have to pull it off. Watch for rust bolts.

if its stuck its just the exhaust elbow which is a bolt on , not the turbo itself
you have to unbolt the downpipe (15mm on those bolts) to get at the fourth bolt
heat the housing ears by the bolt threads with a torch and then penetrating oil , be careful with the penetrating oil its flamable ,
and theres no gasket needed , metal to metal with a little grease or thin smear of orange rtv works

on the exhaust housing dont even try to get them out cold , you need to run the turbo for a couple minutes to heat the housing up and the bolts might break loose (13mm) , even then they still might break off and then youll need to drill out and retap the threads (m8x1.25)

as for outside , if the rust bothers you wire brush it with one of those tooth brush thingys and rub some light oil on it , you could paint it with high heat header spray but you would need to get the metal clean of all rust
the turbo shield covers it so i wouldnt worry about the turbo finish , spend the time on making the shield pretty

Thanks again. I didn't have to disconnect it. I just grabbed the rod and gave it a good pull. It was stronger than I expected but it moved freely. One less thing off my list and another bit of knowledge to add.
