This thread is composed of all clueless people - I have been their and made all the mistakes. You no have clue how to tune these cars. Keep your money in your wallet and your homework. Your best source is gttype. org -Brad

I've had a hard time ignoring some of your bad advise and ignorant posts in the past but I manage to do it. Take a look at yourself before you call someone else clueless.

Back on subject,
If the car has a ton of octane like yours does and it's backfiring at low boost, especially through the intake, it's most likely a fuel problem.

Other things could be would be a bad coilpack or plugs gapped too wide. Not likely would be a cam in the process of going flat. No matter what the problem is, the car needs a hotwire and fuelpump.

Racetronix,Full Throttle,Cotton's Performance are good vendors.
There are some walbro pumps on ebay around $100. You can make your own hot-wire kit or purchase one. As stated make sure they know it's for a hot-air on the hot-wire kit.
Ask all the questions you need to.
That's what this board is about.

Alright well i just recived my new pump and hot wire kit from Racetronix looks very nice kit also i made sure to order the one they said thats made for the 84-85 with the differnt connetor than the 86/87 also i did a fuel pres. test and with the vac. line on i was geting 22-28 PSI and with the vac. line off i was geting 38 and no more. Seems kinda low huh? Turbo Tweek since i have that chip he said that he would run about 43-46 at idel vac. line off, so what im thinking about it losing power and back fireing tho the exaust at WOT 15 PSI of boost is lack of fuel just leaning out and maybe knocking to. What do you guys think. I havent installed the new pump yet but im going to in a about a week. Let me knwo appreceat all the help

I think it's the fuel problem.
Have you tried raising the fuel pressure?
I usually run fp around 40-42.
When I run my thrasher chip, I run the recommended 45.

Bob

Have not tryed it my FP reg. is that nice one from poston it has a screw on top so im not sure how to do it? i belive its a Acufab Reg.

Should have a lock nut. Possibly a allen screw/bolt on top of the regulator.
Not familiar with that design.
Basically loosen the lock nut enough to turn the screw/bolt.
Clockwise should raise the pressure. If you have a gauge you can watch the fp go up/down.

Yea i have a gauge i can put on so what would you say i should run at idel vac line off right? i have a turbo tweek chip what would you say would be good for the stock pump for now?

Raise it up a few pounds 40-42.
If the pumps bad, might make things worse.
I wouldn't get too carried away till you get the pump and hot-wire installed.

Yea im not sure if the pump is BAD it might be going bad tho it has been geting louder more and more lol. how hard is it to install the pump and hot wire kit? do these cars have that accsee panel in the trunk or do you have to drop the tank?

Yeah
Drop the tank. Get as much fuel out as possible.
It has 2 straps that hold it,bolts are prolly corroded.
Might use some penetrationg oil and let soak first.
Unhook the electrical connections, make sure the system is de-pressurized.
Loosen and drop it down some so you can get to the fuel lines on top.
Be prepared you'll prolly get some fuel out of the lines.
Once the lines are unhooked you can drop the tank.
I usually use a floor jack with a 2X4 to lower the tank.
Clean the top of the tank off. There should be a lock-ring to unloosen.
Once it's loose just pull the pump out.

Just replaced my fuel pump in January. Depending on their age and condition you might want to consider replacing the rubber fuel hoses at the tank too. There are also another set of rubber hoses under a metal plate against the body above the rear axle. They were kind of easy to get to once the tank was out, did not even have to jack the car up. Make sure you use fuel injector rated hose if you replace them. The 3/8 & 1/4 inch lines are the supply and return fuel lines. The 5/16 just goes to the evap canister.

One other thing, you may want to check and clean your sending unit too when it is out, because most likely it does not work properly. Here are detailed instructions on how I fixed the sending unit in my car, it is pretty easy. http://home.comcast.net/~84gngary/sendingunit1.html
