i thought i had bad liters - i changed them - noise still there - i thought i had
bad rod bearings - i chagned them - noise still there -- i really think it is a
cracked pass side manifold --- anybody know how check for without pulling off --- it sounds like lifter noise

With cold engine put your hand down there and try to feel the puff of hot air/exhaust.

I have never done it, but it sounds like it might work - spray antiperspirant the white powder, they say, will turn dark quickly, thus revealing the leak.

Look in the seems where the pipes meet, and also the flange areas.

A hose used held up to your ear. I've done it with a IR therometer. It will jump a few hundred degrees as it passes over the crack.

Most common area is the joint between 3 and 5 cylinders. do a search

use a cheap-o acid brush from harbor freight.

just kinda carry the brush over the manifold without actually touching it... when the hairs curl, you found the leak.
