Which alcohol do I need to run? Installing kit this week and need to buy some.

You can use denatured alcohol that is readily available at Home Depot or Ace Hardware..

Isopropyl is fine too, just make sure to note the water %

Lowes has both also at a decent price, usually around $8 a gallon

Denatured works much better than isopropyl but both work. I can run a lot more timing and boost with the denatured.

If running 100% denatured, don't forget to use a couple ozs each time/ fill up of tank of a lubricant for the alky pump! WD-40, Marvel Mystery Oil, Klotz Uplon Top End Lube, or Manhattan Oils Power Plus are ones most people use. Another tip is to purchase a 5 gal quantity from Ace Hardware for about $30 for the small drum. HTH.

Talstar,

I mix about 2 ozs pump lube (MMO) per gallon of denatured, shake in gallon can, and serve to car . I think the alky tank is one-half gallon capacity. I may try in the future, some of that Manhattan Oils Power Plus top end lube product as it comes in nice scented flavors (smells) like grape, cherry, etc.

I use a capful of lube Klotz Uplon now.

Used to use a 2 second squirt of WD-40.

Per tankful with the SMC kits.

I haven't been using any lubricant in my isoproply/distilled water mix for the last 40,000 miles. How long before I have a problem?

That's interesting John. I know you well enough by now to know that you would never go out and spend all that money on a kit, so what pump are you using? :)

You are using iso, alchy, and that is a lot less corrosive than the denatured, as I am sure you know. Perhaps that is the answer, either that or your car is as cheap as you are, and simply will not let the pump burn up!

Tightwad!! :)

Denatured is very popular with lots of us, and works well with 65psi pumps, and large jets.

Isoprophyl works best (in general) with 100 psi pumps, (sureflo?) and smaller jets like Aquamist 1 mm. (need 4 of these to work)

Good to keep in mind that some of the other pumps tolerate denatured alchy better.

I use Klotz now. Cheap (John?) insurance...;)

I bought mine direct from Steve C. at SMC.

Same place as the alky. kits.

Just email him for pricing.

When mixing with water you dont need pump lube. 30% or more water and lube is not necessary

Yes, I definitely mix in the distilled water........cuts down the cost of the mixture. :D I really like my SUREFLO pump. Only time it didn't work in the last three years was when I left the pump switch off inadvertently. I don't know though.......Was thinking of going with the SMC as soon as the price goes to $400. I feel embarrassed when I have to tell people my setup only cost $150.
:o

John what do you use for a tank? I use the overflow bowl and love it. I mix distilled in to cut costs too:D
I know it helped with knock suppression also, because I saw a reduction in knock when I was dialing the system in by changing the mix all by itself, no jet changes.

What kind of nozzle and jet are you running?

Yes, I use the overflow bottle as my alky reservoir. I've been using approximately a 50/50 mix of isopropyl and distilled water. Have a 60 psi Sureflo pump and I'm currently using a .032 nitrous jet into the up pipe. I'm going to try a .035 jet soon. Today I picked up 5 gallons of methanol and I'm going to give it a try. Any suggestions for mix? I have my pump come on about 10 lbs. of boost with stock turbo and I was holding about 23 lbs of boost. Lately I have been having trouble holding the 23. It goes to 23 on the shifts, then trails off towards 20. Sometimes I get 0 knock and other times I get 2 to 3 degrees. I just don't have an opportunity to get on it that often. I set things up......then poke around a couple weeks and then, when I'm expecting a steady diet of 23 lbs., I'm looking at 20, if I think to look. That's what I discovered a couple weeks ago so I've been trying to tune it up. This is me tuning it up..........   :( :o :D

Your setup is the exact same as mine, John. I am using a .030 jet right now, and am still getting a tickle of knock using a Thrasher 100 (about 25º). I just bought a .036, .040, and .045 jet from Jay Jackson and will be trying them, but I wont be able to let you know how it goes until spring. Jay said he was using the .045 on his  but I dont know if that was with the stock turbo or not.

Today, I changed from a 50/50 mix of isopropyl/distilled water to a 66/33 mix of methanol/distilled. Made no other changes and went to "0" knock. That was good! ;)
