My 87 GN is at the body shop getting repainted. Were the door handles and lock the same black as the body or are they a flat black originally? thanks

R.J.

It's more of a satin black.
SEM 39143 black trim paint is pretty popular for the outside trim on GN's.

I never heard of painting the door handles. They come black from the factory.

Above info I agree with handles where black from GM and satin black is as close as you can expect to come and look correct same goes for all the black molding trim

another word of advice have body shop leave off all the emblems...best to let paint bake also less chance of them installing them in the wrong places.

Dennis- are you saying to paint the door handles or just leave them black?

Absolutely!! And if you can't find SEM Trim Black, go to your local autozone and get Duplicolor Engine Enamal Low Gloss 1634 It's almost a perfect match to the SEM.

They do come black from the factory, but after 25 years they tend to fade some, just as the window moldings and wheel well moldings do. Definately give them a coat of SEM satin trim black.

Just saw this thread has me thinking about doing mine but wondering wouldn't the paint wear off quickly seeing how people are always using them?

Not really. 95% of the contact is on the under side when you pull up on the handle to open the door.

I pulled the hood trim, wheel well molding, trunk lid molding and taped around door handles and spray painted them with SEM satin black a few years ago and it still looks good.

I just bought new door handles when I got my car painted. I figured if I'm spending $5500 for new paint what is another $50 for new handles? I also bought Paul Castle's inserts for the handles. I think they look great.
