What did I break? Any guesses?

New engine and fresh tranny/3200 stall 9/11 converter.
Went full throttle at 15psi for half a second, and I lost all forward gears. No big noise, no burned fluid.....just like it disconnected.
Car is fine in park, no reverse,no forward......

What did I break?

The shaft on the forward drum.

Ditto. I did it last year. I got a hardened billet drum from CK Performance (he's having a good sale on them right now) and installed it myself using his book. It's not too bad of a job but if you've never torn into an automatic transmission (I had not) it's a little intimidating. I took lots of pictures so I knew how to put it back together. I still wound up putting a bearing in upside down (didn't hurt anything).

hah turbojimmy, i bet it was the bearing in the OD planetary cover right? ;) Anyways, it could be the forward drum but since there was no noise or no bang im leaning more towards a pump failure. You can pull one of the tranny cooler lines and start the car (it will make a mess if the pump is working) if nothing comes out then its a pump problem. Good luck with it.

It probably was the bearing in the OD planetary cover. Chris had my transmission apart a couple of weeks ago (forward clutch seized) and asked who put the drum in. I proudly replied "me!" and he told me about it. The transmission was toast (I have one of CK's off the shelf units in there now) but it didn't have anything to do with the bearing.

I don't know a lot about them, but when it failed last year I was told it was one of 3 things: pump, forward drum or input shaft. I had just left a light really hard and it 'went into neutral'. No noises or any indication of a problem other than instant red-line. The first and easiest thing to check is the pump by pulling a line. That's what I did, but obviously I had plenty of pressure. The shaft on the drum had snapped very cleanly. It's amazing when you look at it and consider how much torque it handles. It's not very big at all.

If no line pressure then its the pump. If theres line pressure its one of the following: forward housing shaft, input shaft, OD ring gear, or the OD planet.

I had something like this happen to me once. It ended up being that the converter needed spacers between it and the flywheel. The converter lost contact with the pump.....then nothing. After spacing the converter, I was good to go. Hope you are that lucky ;)

Update:
It has pressure, took off a cooler line and started the car. Pumped just fine.....
We took the tranny out tonight, so we will see what happens.

I had the same thing happen recently. My TCI converter broke, so consider it as a possibility.

And the winner is......forward drum! Clean break......
Hopefully CK can find us a billet drum now...

If not, call Len Freeman and see what he can do for you. He's always bent over backwards for me. 702-434-2991
