Wanted to get your opinions on which fuel to use. Is there an octane you prefer or a brand name? Why?

Thanks!

:D

Well, as far as brand, I get Texaco whenever I can. Two reasons for that: 1. I've never gotten any 'bad gas' from them, and 2. We don't have Sunoco here!:( I think the octane issue is best answered as 'the higher the better!', but it would help to know about your setup in order to ascertain what your REQUIREMENTS are.

Years ago I read a Hot Rod Mag. article which they tested all different fuels to see which made the most power...Amoco 93-Texaco 93-Chevron 93 etc... At the time Shell was rated at 92 octane and made the most power. Go figure. Shell is now at 93. I run Chevron 93 because the Techroline in it works real well keeping eveything clean. I also run Sunoco 110 leaded or Cam 2. Whatever is available. HTH.

In general with turbo charged engines, I think the higer the octane the better. I use 100 UL on the street and 116 or 118 at the track depending where I but the fuel. I don't really care about the brand as much as I do the motor octane.

I remember reading something in Hot-Rod where they tested diferrent fuels including 100 UL and didn't see much power difference. Of course that was on a N/A motor and they really didn't tune it for each gas. I can guarantee that my car makes a lot more power with 100 UL and 23# of boost and 23* of timing than on 91 octane with 15# of boost and 18* of timing.

That's interesting about the Shell gas... wonder what caused it to have more power? Different 'gas' or just that lower octane's produce more power? I have seen that Shell's V-Power has a lot of additives, like techroline I would guess, you think these additives are the same?

Thanks

Sunoco 94 on the street. I haven't made it to the track yet, but it'll be Sunoco 110 or 116.

Later,

Steve.

Hey Street72, I'm not sure about the difference in the additives. Maybe the Shell is better refined?? Even though the Shell made more power at 92... You should DEFINATELY always run the Highest octane affordable to you. Remember all your engine is...is a big Air Pump... the more air and fuel you can pump in and out the more power you'll make. The higher the octane the better the flame travel across the piston in the combustion chamber which burns all the fuel in the cylinder..Hence more power. Lower octane doesn't burn as well and leaves unburnt fuel in the cylinder which causes detonation. As we all know thats bad especially on our TR's.

I always thought that it was high compression that caused the detonation due to the fact that lower octanes are more susceptible to self combustion at high cylinder pressures?

XLR8, where the heck do you get Sunoco 100 on the street??? We get 94 here and i thought that was good....

You are correct. Turbocharged and Supercharged engines have low compression ratios for a reason. During normal driving 87 octane is fine. When BOOST time comes you want the highest octane available. Boost increases cylinder pressure greatly which increases compression. Thats why these guys running 25-30 lbs. of boost need race fuel because it can raise their compression to 14:1 or more.

A place called Duggan Petrolium carries 100 UL and they just raised the price to $4.00/gal! They also have 104 UL for $4.80/gal. Their 118 is $5.25/gal.

There are two gas stations that sell 100 Octane UL within 15 minutes of me. Englishtown is only 20 mintues away too. Both are close to $5 a gallon. I think Englishtown is the cheapest at $4.75/gallon. I can also get the 5 or 10 gallon drums of 110 octane from the motorcyle shops, but they charge too much.

I've run 100 octane UL all the time since the early spring, but I think I'm going to run Mobil 93 or maybe Sunoco 94 for the winter.

I always use Mobil gas for regular 93 Octane. In the winter I've had cars that had problems using other gas but always run good with Mobil.

Check out my thread about you:

On 8/19/04 you said you would send me my money. That was the last email even though I have tried to contact you via email and PM on this site since then.

I'm gona be posting on your posts until you resolve this issue with me.

It would be so simple for you to resolve this by sending me the louzy $41.50 I sent for the first module on ebay. Then I would send you back the two paper weights you sent me. At my cost no less.

Gasoline is produced and shipped where it is near you. Texaco gas isn't only made in 1 spot and shipped all over. All of the gas is the same when produced by octane ratings. Then some "special" fuel is added to match the companys wants.

They can call it whatever they want "v-power" "super clean" whatever the brand name is. But it's all the same gas.

Try and goto the pump that has the most customers, allowing the gas to flow and not go bad.

Personally I use only amoco or shell only. 91 octane is highest rating here. (ya i'm a hypocrite)
