Been talking with a few buddies.. what turbo whistles the loudest.

I've owned a TA49, TE44, PT51, PT54, TE67, and a TE64.

The two loudest whistles have been the PT54 and the 64 on the car now. Granted the PT54 had a turbonetics cover, and this one has the hybrid 3in/2.5 out.

So what makes a turbo louder in the whistle dept, and whats the loudest one anyone has used.

Just an off topic post kinds :)

How loud are the 70+ series turbo in comparison?

The pt 61 I just put on my syclone is alot quiter than the te44 that was on there. Just driving around you cant here it trying to spool like the 44. And it runs alot better part throttle with the 61.

The TE-44 on my street car is loud, especially since the car got a 3" dp and a single shot:D . You can hear it while driving part throttle in a 25 mph zone:cool: .

My TE44 was also a whistle monger, my new 66 hardly makes any whistle and I kinda miss it....:(

The T-70 bb unit sounds loud thru the intake. Up till 1PSI, it makes a cool shreading sound, like air being ripped apart by a big weed-eater. The exaust is a different sound also, just a little more chopped up sounding. At big boost, the front of the car sounds like a jet.

Turbo2nr,
I bet that does sound good. The best comment I ever got from a partial ricer, had some neon on the inside of his saturn, after I drove around him at wot in a 45 zone and slowed back down was "That thing sounds like a f$%^&n jet airplane" I just had to laugh ;) he had no idea what had just bit him but he started it by going around me then pulling in front of me so I decided to return the favor.

My TE45 is ridiculously loud w/ the dump pipe open. But after 1psi, the cars exhaust just takes over.

But at the same time I've also heard my friend TE44 and when you let off the throttle the compressor surge is ridiculosly loud/cool

I didnt particularly find the TE44 that loud compared to the 54. This 64 you can hear two cars back at part throttle.

The 67 was quiet.

Maybe its weird.. I like driving the car with the windows down to hear the turbo whistle ;)

My TE45 was loud. At medium throttle it sounded like a P/S diesel.I also ran a little GT32 in my street car that was loud as hell. I now have the GT67 and that is very quiet.

It's all about the noise to me. I love all the sounds of the turbo cars. My TE67 was a little quiet also. Even though it was also a P-trim, when compaired to my current turbo, it sounded smooth and quiet. My current turbo is also a P-trim, but it has ten, not eleven blades on the turbine. I think a lot of PTE's turbos use the ten blade, right? Big difference in sound. I guess that would be a similar effect as going up in A/R, but you loose a little rotating weight. I have had three GT style compressor turbos, and all were more quiet than the old school wheels.

BB-65 here and it's pretty loud coming into boost, once it hits boost it quiets down. But as with any BB you can hear the damn thing getting ready to go about a week b-4 it does so..:D

Innovative double ball bearing 70 with a cold air kit and ultraflows with no cat.

Ready for take off.

No BOV however. :p

My 44 is loud. I would imagine the faster a turbo has to spool to support boost the louder it would be??? Maybe? Anyway, if that theory has any truth I guess the smaller ones would be louder...

I think little turbos pushed hard go supersonic, and you can't hear too much anymore.

My TE44 has a nice whine to it at part throttle going through the ATR pitbulls. Uncorked at the cutout and flowing through the THDP it sounds like a cross between a freaking F14 preparing for takeoff and a buzz saw mill! It's enough to scare most ricers and small animals.

Hi i say a b1 on a cummins or a stock 6 liter furd with an exhuast they whisstle like crazy . I heard an 88 on a 109 pretty loud but have not tryed yet maybe one day soon hehe.

Like a few others have stated, take off the exhaust and just run a downpipe and that turbo will be louder than you might want. I ran just the downpipe for over a year and the sound was incredible. Just coming into boost the sound was loud enough that people a block up were turning to see what was coming. This was at around 1-2 psi. The open exhaust had a part in that too. I've been told my car sounded like a turbo John Deere. I now have the hi-flo 3" cat and 3" single shot and the new TE-63-1 and all is quiet...kinda. The single shot has a nice rumble to it but kinda drowns out the turbo whistle. You may want to run a cut-out. That way you can open it when you want that monster whistle and close it when the cops are around.:)

Sound Strategy

Howdy,

If I want my car to sound like a well muffled muscle car most of the time but when I lay into it sounds like a 777 on takeoff and send small children running how would I do that? Do GT wheels and/or ball bearings have much effect on that?

Thanks,
