Before purchasing a new axle for my car, I wanted to pull off my differential cover and make sure I just needed a new axle, and that the diff/posi wasn't damaged as well. Luckily it looks in good shape, but I am puzzled by what I saw. Compared to the pictures of the stock posi unit I saw here http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/pictureguides/rear/stock.html mine is very different. Instead of the standard S-clip to load the clutches, I have a solid I-shaped block. Also, when I rotated the wheels around to see the other side of the carrier, there was this odd-looking mechanism on the other side that spins around very fast when I rotate the tire (like maybe 20-30 revolutions for each revolution of the tire) that I am clueless about. I freely admit my ignorance when it comes to rear-ends, so please, if anyone can PLEASE offer any info I would appreciate it. My main concern is if I DO have a non-stock posi or rear-end, will it affect what axles I need to buy? I was hoping to order the axle this weekend, so the sooner I can figure this out, the better. Thanks again!!! Oh, and here are some pic of both sides of the carrier, so you can see both the I-block, and the funny-looking mechanism. Thanks for the help!

that looks like a stock gm posi-traction unit.

so i would say it is a stocker.

i believe that is a weight to unlock a pin. as it spins it unlocks and then you get a "posi"rear end.

it a GM factory posi gov-lock (governer lockup) , they use those in latemodel trucks and such, probably a 30 spline unit which means youll have 30 spline axles when you yank them

not sure on its power limit but i dont think its designed for track use , unlike a posi this type goes full lock like a spool when it slips , otherwise it acts like an open rear . n so it basically provides tracton to one tire and as you apply greater force and the one strts to slip it starts to apply pressure to the other side untill both move at the same speed at which time it releases pressure and lets it go back to the other wheel , a posi has traction to both tires and maintains force equally , if one tire slips the other still has power

heres one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/88-98-Truck-POS...043792244QQcategoryZ33731QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

WTF? I've got a truck posi-locker-hybrid that is prone to failure in my GN? well that sucks!!! Guess now instead of 75 bucks for a good used stock GN axle, I'm gonna have to get a pricey aftermarket one (assuming it is a 30 spline one) Anyone have any clue how to remove an axle on one of these units??? Man, this just pisses me off!

i have no experience with the rear , it should be a 30spline unit so your axles probably are aftermarket already , stock were 28 spline , vehicles from 88 up were 30 spline and i dont know if there is a stock axle in 30 spline that fits our cars

unless you already have cclip eliminators on there to remove the axles remove the small bolt and slide out the large center pin from the centersectiom and then push the axles in and remove the c-clips from the axle ends with a magnet

That carrier could possibly be out of a 84-85 hot air car or Olds H/O 442 too. They did make them in 28 spline versions to so I would pull an axle to confirm your spline count. I have the gov-locs listed for 84-85 G-bodies but have never seen one in person. Maybe one of the hot guys will chime in to confirm whether GM used these in those years instead of the Eatons.

Well i DO have a hot-air... I had thought that all the rear-ends were the same from 84-87 on these cars. Did the "posi" hot-airs come factory with a gov-lock instead of a normal clutch-type limited-slip? I just pulled my axle, and indeed, it is a 28-spline peice, so at least it looks like i'll be able to use a used stock axle, not get a spendy aftermarket 30-spline one. I will post in the hot-air section and see what kind of rear-end some of the other hot-air guys have.

I guess my book is right after all. Maybe the increase in torque for the IC cars is the reason for the different carriers? That gov-loc wasn't used in anything high performance(except the hot airs) so who knows how much power than can really handle. I think all of the mail order places were still selling the Auburns for under 3 bills though as the Eatons are discontinued through GM.

I have a bone stock rear from a 84 T Type in my garage and it had the same exact unit as my 86 with the clutches.
