Hi guys I need to be schooled on turbos for our buicks. First I am currently running a te45a turbo with the stock headers, what is the biggest that can fit on them without any modification issues? I am looking at a 6466 or 6766 turbo and then there is a 71q turbo. What is the advantage of a q turbo over a p turbo like mine ? Will a q turbo fit on the factory headers? Also what would you say is max hp with the factory headers. Thanks.

How fast are you looking to go? Your hp goal and supporting mods will determine which turbo more than what is the biggest that will fit. With the new turbine wheels and billet compressors, the 6766 is tough to beat, and has been 8's.

question is how fast are you going now and at what weight ,boost and fuel ...and whats the goal

the TE45A is old school 66mm p trim , think thats basically a 66-65 but with cast wheels not the new billet design wheels , still should be good into the low 10s

any three bolt gn exhaust housing turbo will bolt up... and thats means up to a 76Q (need alot of converter )
but these new smaller billets (67mm wheels) are making some serious power ,
not that the 71Q is slouch but guys with the 67 are making me look really old school
at BG
Jason White was in the eights already ...threw on a 67 and still went high 8s 150s.
Sean Hayes went mid 9.5s 140 on a 67 with the little E cover (3 in 2out) and supposedly was THS legal and still not cranked up.

kidglok just went 9.90 137 on 93 alky with champ irons and a 6765Hp (non ball bearing 4in 3 out)

the small turbos are starting to to show their muscle and combined with the PTC 9.5 dusty spec'd converter they are getting it done

The larger turbo will have more lag, which isn't totally a bad thing. I ran a 76HPQ on a 245"engine, it was a laggy pig, a new 67 or 71 billet turbo would have been better suited. I ran the same 76 on my 274 with 9.5:1 compression, same converter and cam, and it was lightening fast. And with 8 sec power, lag helps with traction, so with a smaller turbo making the same power, it would need a boost controller with the ability to ramp the boost in.

A friend of mine runs a 6765 billet turbo on a 235" engine with a crappy 10" 2800 stall converter. It spools very fast,

What part number for a 71q and a 76 mm turbo. Car has no et yet but made 560 rwhp on 25#s with the te45a. I am currently building a stage 2 motor and am looking for mid 9s to high 8s et. So I would like to know turbo to get me there. Some people have told me a 6466 turbo can get me there, but I think that turbo is on the small side. And what is the difference in the covers ?

with the cubes of the stage2 you could go 76Hpq unless plans are for Xtsm which limits turbo to 71mm but why the stock headers if your plans are stage 2

if you absolutely have to run 3bolt headers ( Xtsm rules 3 bolt turbo only ) i would ditch the stock headers and go with the TA performance race headers ,
if rules dont require a 3bolt and i had stage2 and was planning to run anything bigger than a 71 i would be going 4 bolt headers
..i know its more money but if you try to do it with stock headers youll have to keep fixing them and they are restrictive even with a lot of fancy work

you asked for part # ..
assume you are looking for brand new so just call a precision vendor like Hartlineperformance.com
or for custom PM Bison and he should be able to hook you up as well

If you're looking to run mid 9's to high 8's you'll need a lot of supporting components. The torque converter will not be the same for mid 9's as high 8's with everything else the same. Id probably be looking at a GT42 style turbo if i was looking for high 8's. Trying to take a small turbo like JW uses in TSM and extracting what he has out of it might take years. This is why you dont see anyone else any where near him with the same turbo. Unless you're building around a class id avoid a 3 bolt and be sure to use an external wastegate. You will need some sort of boost control also.

Thanks for the help guys. So what would you say is the max hp with the stock headers ? I have read where people were having issues with the ta headers fitting have that issue been resolved? Also when it comes to turbo brands which one is better precision or turbonetics and why ? Thanks

I'll sell my billet 6768. It went 9.26 @ 23lbs. of boost on my stage motor with plenty left. Just cleaning up the tune and hitting it with more boost earlier would have probably got it in the 8's.

It is a monster on a larger motor with the right converter. Just rolling into the throttle in high gear at 30mph it spools instantly.

I'd look into Borg Warner. They have a nice selection of wheels and the aftermarket stuff available is top notch.
