What TIG welder to buy?

Miller seems to be the entry level choice on some forums I've been searching...but I would like to hear some of you experiences. Just need something for typical race car type welding. I can do alot with the MIG....but I can't TIG with it....:biggrin:

I'm a hobbyist, so price is the huge factor. But not so huge that I won't save longer if need to. I don't want to spend money twice. I've learned that lesson.

Every one will steer you into the big home machines like the Millers 180's and Lincolns. I ve had great luck with my Thermal Arc 185. Its very compact and will do the job of the big machines. I have welded everything a car guy could possibly weld. With a small tank it can be quite portable if need be. They were a few hundreds cheaper than the big machines several years ago but not anymore.

I like the Miller syncrowave 200.

I have a synchrowave 250 that has never let me down. It is probably overkill for most hobbiest.

Louie's welder is much more portable and seems to do everything he wants it to do.

Go to groups.google.com (or if you read Usenet news some other way, go there ) and search for the group sci.engr.joining.welding and start reading. Ernie Leimkuhler is an instructor in Seattle with about 30 years experience and take anything he says as gospel -)). Do a search for "leimkuhler recommend* group:sci.engr.joining.welding" as a start to see various recommedations he's made over the years. Your question comes up every few weeks or months there just like "what turbo should I run" comes up here, and there are several good guys there who are happy to help.

Yeah I dont know what that is all about? Kinda weird. Perhaps is because he will be very vulnerable this weekend? And I will be there to capture it on video or photographs?

I have a chance to buy a 1999 Miller 350 dx. Maybe under 800. Nice shape. Water cooler and pedal, no torch. Has the pulse technology I'm told. I'm gonna research the model more today.

I have a nice MIG and this TIG will be for strictly race stuff. I just hate to buy a base model that won't do that one thing I need it to. once I get a little experience with it.

Why, whatcha got?!
