I have a friend who is getting out of Buicks and has a 90k mile engine that was pulled from a running/driving car. Rear main and valve covers leak, but otherwise runs ok. Has no accessories, sensors, headers, turbo, IC or brackets. What is something like this worth? Thinking of buying it to build a nasty motor for my car.

Since a bare 109 block is going for $500 if you can even fine one in good shape, you can figure what the rest of the parts would be worth to you?

I sell known good shortblocks for $1500 and up. These are GM assembled and I pull caps in front of the buyer showing it wasn't run in the grenade mode. They are worth quite a bit more as a non hurt stock assembly than any "rebuilt" that isn't documented and knowing I'll be the one cleaning up and installing it I have little concern about what ifs. I won't even put a "rebuilt" in a car unless I have documentation. Not worth the hassle. I've seen plenty of mystery engines crap out in short order over the years. Then again I've seen 30k engines that were wasted and 150k miles that looked like 30k. Usually if the car was close to stock with low boost and simple bolt ons the bottom end is solid. Usually, not always. That's why taking a look is worth it

Thanks guys, I'll throw him a reasonable offer. I didn't want to overpay him, but also don't want to take advantage of a friend.

I fully agree with Bison as it make no sense to tear down a good running original GN engine as I have seen them at almost 200K miles of normal driving that are still used used on a daily basis.

With a small investment of a couple hundred dollars and some labor we can take a known low mileage engine and do an extensive check and freshen it for much less than a $4K complete rebuild for a street engine to serve the same purpose.

The always escalating price of parts and labor make a nice used GN engine a good bargain for normal driving, and I normally have complete freshened long blocks in stock for a "quick" turn-around with my customers!
