what's up with this ignition module?

The car was missing/sputtering occasionally under acceleration so I decided it was time for some attention. I did a few tune-up type things like fuel filter, plugs, and inspected the wires. We bought a new coil pak a few days ago and went to put it on tonight, only to find that the milky looking insulation type stuff that the wires on the ignition module go to, is all bubbled and there is a crack that goes all the way across the piece where the insulator comes in from the driver's side of the car.

I know it isn't supposed to be like that, but would that cause my problem and also, who has the best price on ignition modules?

I just bought one at auto zone-$100.99. Mine died,gooey epoxy,paint was bubbled in a few places. They say GM is the best though.
