What's wrong with it now?

I posted about this in the "general" section without thinking about the trans section.

I was coming home from work and hit it up this small hill, and the red light comes on for knock. I let off immediately, and when I touch the gas again, another red light on the knock gauge. I let off (wondering wtf to do now). I limpet it back home 3 miles and shut it down.
Sunday, I feel like dealing with it, and I have this grinding noise at idle or just off idle, coming back down. I pull the surpentine belt off, and now I hear it from the back side of the engine. Just for grins, I put it in reverse and get this 1 second shriek and then it goes in reverse. Same thing with drive. I pop the inspection cover off to check torque converter bolts to flex plate, and they're good.
I can drive the car, with all gears working. What's up with the trans?
Help, please, I'm not a transmission guy.

Check the fluid? TV cable adjusted?

Yes and yes. Trans was operating fine and then wasn't.

Thanks for the offer, Chuck, I may do that. I'm not working at Baxter or in Madison anymore. I'm at another pharmaceutical plant on the Savannah River until March. I'll be in touch and have a good Thanksgiving!
