I am looking for a new alternator for my T...where do I go?

Is this an autozone part or not?

I believe Kirban is supossed to be coming out with one soon.

Go to Pep Boys and as for a 1996 Impala SS Alternator. It's a cheap upgrade.

That's a great idea. I think the GN alt will bolt in it's place. Just switch them and don't tell him. :D

I forget/cant find the part number. Call up your local dealer and get the alternator part no. Go to gmpartsdirect.com and order. Should be about 150 for a new alternator including shipping.

Chris

If you have yor current bad alternater, take it to a alt / starter rebuilder and have them rebuild it. It should only take about an hour.

I just got some more crap from Kirban and his newsletter has a 120amp alternator no core $149.95. Not bad:o

Buy the rebuild kit from T B S . c o m and get the extra bearing,its a 200amp altnnator kit...doing mine now...

Tom, I took my alternator to AutoZone and got one that is an ACDelco rebuild and looks exactly like the original for $98. The new one puts out 126amps. I had them swap the black pulley to the new one because the pulleys on the new one were gold. Might save you a little green!! --Jeremy

I have four cars that use this style alternator. I got about 20 120amp alternators sittin on the shelf that I got at the junkyard for $10 each. 3 out of 4 of my cars are running these $10 units. :D

How many spares do you drive around with, in the trunk?

www.4alterstart.com

I called them today and they said New, Lifetime Warranty, CS144, Chrome alternator would be $250 and a 3 week wait.
$150 for a lifetime NON chromed alt.

I am going to find out if I can send them my stocker and get the price lowered.

just checking

Hi, I looked at the pictures between the Impala Alt and TR Alt. the rear support bolt looks to be in a different place. Do those of you using the Impala Alt leave off the rear bolt or do something else? I like the idea of using the Impala Alt since it is cheaper and rated at 140A. thanks.

Not 100% sure, but I think that the rear of the alternator housing can be clocked to make it work.

I dont think you can use the rear bolt. You can only use 2 of the 3. That's why I didnt use it on my dads car.

jason: thanks for the correction. I thought that I had read somewhere that it was simply a matter of clocking the rear of the alternator housing.

ok

I don't see "clocking" working since the bolt position is more towards the center vs. the outside edge on the TR Alt. I guess you could swap cases but not sure. I guess I could make up a little extension piece and bolt if to the original brace and then to the Impala Alt. Or leave out the rear bolt.

Of course it's best to learn from people who have done this before.....
