Just finishing up timing chain swap but the oil pump didn't come with any directions stating pressure of each spring. Which to go with?
Dan

High volume pump use the yellow (50#) spring. Assuming you didn't modify the block oil passages (2&3 main feed holes) and your engine is "tight". Why did you go with the big pump?

Stock cover had a crack on the top pass side:confused: don't know why front seal was leaking and a HV cover with pump was cheaper than stock so I went with it. Oil PSI was fine but some slack in the chain gears looked good. Cold Psi was 60, warm 22-24 and cruise was 50. I'm basically asking which would be closest to the stock spring? Russ do you know the pressure of all the springs/ yellow, blue.white and I think orange? thanks
Dan

Blue is 70#. I don't know bout the others. Think they're for the v-8s. I'm running the stock pump with KBs booster plate and the yellow spring with a 1/4" shim. Pressure cold is 80#, warm 25# idle, 70# WOT

Dan,

I run the HVOP on my 70 GS455 and have caught some flack from some of the V8 Buicks guys. I don't have the answers to your questions but if you do a search over at www.V8Buick.com on this topic, you can find lots of reading and reference. I was able to do research there to help in setting end and side play as well as shim info. HTH.

Evans, the reason for the flack is that the std. oil pump for the 455 has the same length gears as HVOP for the smallblocks(231, 350, etc)...The HVOP for the 455 are a quarter inch longer...The HVOP for the big blocks put too much of a load on the front cam bearing and distributor gear and will wipe both out in short order...

IMO, a HVOP is a bandaid...It's a "fix" to cover up another problem somewhere else in the motor...With proper bearing clearances in the motor and a couple of modifications that are listed in the Buick Power Source manual, the stock oil pump is more than enough for our motors...

I DISAGREE.......RAN THEM FOREVER ON MY 455s WITH NO PROBLEM AND RUN IT ON MY TR FOR THE PAST 80,000 MILES WITH NO PROBLEM. CAN THE PUMP CAUSE A PROBLEM? NOT IN MY EXPERIENCE OR MANY OTHERS. :p

Got it all done and so far so good. Went with the yellow spring and picked up about 6 PSI across the board.
