Who trades in an 87 GN to a dealer.....?

So a co-worker of mine mentioned a few months ago to me that a local Infiniti dealer (yes, not a typo) had an 87 GN sitting for sale out front. I drove by a day later and it was gone.

A few months have passed and I happened to stop at the dealer while I was at work inquiring about the car. I figured they were selling it for someone (employee, dealer owner, etc) on consignment.

.....boy was I wrong. Apparently an older gentlemen did not want his modified 1987 GN anymore and used it as a trade in for a used Acura the dealership was selling. They put the GN up for 19K and supposedly within a very short time two guys from Kansas drove out and picked it up. The salesman I spoke with distinctly remembered the GN because he said "it was difficult to put a price on it because you can't just use KBB to figure out that car." I have no idea what they valued it at for the trade, did not ask. I'm sure he got hosed.

Either he fell out of love with the car or knew it's value and decided it was time to cash it in, not wanting to hassle with selling it himself to Joe Schmo. I have considered it - if you get what you want, who cares who pays? He stopped loving it and it became an asset with a value. You never know what car dealers will give you for a car. Sometimes they pay too much, especially if they really need to sell the other car. Trust me, I know this.

Does not sound that unusual, I took a buddy to a Dodge dealership here in my town, I know a few people who work there and who appraise the trade-ins, they threw a stupid high number at me if I ever wanted to part with my car. This particular dealership does have and has been known to sell some very nice older Detroit iron. I have seen a few guys trade-in their classics there.

Back around 2000 I stopped by a dealer to look at a used Lincoln and had my T in the avatar. He said he would take it in trade. I smiled and said okay I'll bite how much? With an absolute straight face he with his manager standing there said Turbo Regals are worth less than the regular Regals because they are harder to sell and offered me $3800.00 only because it was absolutely rust free and the interior was perfect. I said "you're too generous but I think I'll keep it...Dink".

i know it's hard to believe, but to some people these cars are just things that they own that are worth money. people get them, play with them, enjoy them, then lose interest and just want it gone..

This is so funny!!!!
Here is the story. My buddy Mike had this car for a few years he dropped some money on adding all the goodies.
Alky, Precission SLIC, brakes upgraded, new paint done to the car was beautiful. He kinda was tired of all the issues these Buicks throw us. He was always worried about driving it out. Worried that it would be stolen or someone would mess up the paint. When he told me he traded it in I wanted to smack him. I told him that he should have brought the car around and I would have taken all the goodies off the car. What's a dealer gonna know anyway. They gave him 19k on the trade but I'm sure the dealer sold the car to him for much more than it was worth. That's usually how dealerships work anyway. The car was really nice stock motor No rust!! He already doesn't like his Acura and I know his wife was upset when he got rid of it. Im still hoping he buys another Buick soon.

You should of pulled his own line on him.3800is a nice downpayment an how did you plan on financing the rest.

I had a friend trade his in, and they gave him alot for trade. They offered more than he was going to ask.

It all depends on what they were selling the car he bought for though. You can get $10,000 for a trade or $5,000 for the same trade against two different vehicles to buy and the dealer will have the same money in it either way. IE: Buy a new diesel truck vs a new Focus and you'll see what I mean if you work the same trade against each. I'm out of the dealer business now but that's how it works. Even when I'd explain it to customers though, all they really cared about was SEEING the best trade figure and not really caring about the trade DIFFERENCE. The difference is the important number you need to focus on when comparing dealers. If you're not comparing dealers, than you are doing yourself a disservice.

Same thing happend here several months ago. A nice low mile GN got traded in at the Mercedes dealership. They kept the car about 2 months until the advertised price dropped below $20k.

Salesman told me they sold it for 19K. Not sure if he meant that's what they gave the owner for it or not. Check your PM's.

There are a lot of TR's for sale at dealerships. The funny part is reading the listing. I have seen "FBI" a couple of times.

On another note, if I had a car I did not want but a dealer had I car I did want....whatever helps knock off a couple grand.

I just would not do it with a Buick. You get into these cars for a reason, that reason rarely leaves you. Watching "the fast and the furious" makes for poor decisions on your next car purchase.

Sometimes on regal's they say turbocharged V-8's and I try my best to stop in and ask where the other two cylinders are...Same thing with Cummins (inline six) 99% of the time listed as a V-8 diesel lol

We were visiting my wife's family out in NW Iowa back in 1998 and I always check the want ads. Sioux City Journal had "1987 T-Type Regal for sale" was all it said, no price. I show my wife and she says NOOOOO more cars. It was a pawn shop in South Sioux City, Nebraska and the guy says he is asking $5K. I say for that price we have to go look even though it is 60 miles south. The car is in the back of a steel building with 1'' of dust on it and four flat original Goodyear tires. He says no one has looked at it for over a year and I'm the first bite in months, obviously not a car salesman. So he hoses it off and the car is gorgeous gun metal grey, perfect paint and trim, not a spot of corrosion, perfect rims. This was never driven in mid-west winters. I open the door and the interior is perfect. The door sills are absolutely shiny and the original floor mats look like no one ever put a heel on it under the gas pedal, the leather wrapped grey wheel is perfect too and the interior plastic chrome is bright. My wife whispers to me, "we have to buy this car"! I almost fainted as she never says buy it. I had my OTC 4000, hook it up, start it up and the muffler is completely rotten on the bottom from him starting it and the water building up but it runs perfect. It has 23K miles and I know that has to be accurate. So I pop the hood and it is just like new under there too and completely stock but the AC has no freon oh well. Still scrutinizing and mumbling to myself about the muffler and AC so the guy says look I have to sell this thing how about $4500? I would have gladly paid the $5000 but say OK with my wife nodding approval. I ask him if we can fill the tires and take it for a drive. He begins moving stuff and I fill the tires with a small pump he brings me. The car runs perfect and the trans shift so tight I could not believe it (I've never driven a new one or one with this low miles so it was a surprise). Brought the car to Florida and promptly sold it to the first guy to look at it for $15K and bought my white T for $10K from a friend and sold my beat 87 Designer T for $6K (exactly what I paid for it one year earlier).
