Why does my 85 Regal not going into reverse

I have a 1985 Regal NA that doesn't go into reverse unless it feels like it. Any ideas what would cause this. After it warms up and with a little messing with the shifter it will engage. Then will engage every time.

Hard to say, but if it engages in drive with no problem, then it has to be some leaky internal seals, or a linkage problem. Turbo 350 or 200 4R?
