Widest I'd recommend is an MT 255/60. Those fit nicely on the stock GN rim. You can go wider, but the sidewall will buldge and contact patch is less than ideal.

The 255's fit well on the rim but 275/50's will work also but they are a little bulged in the sidewall. If you are running 12.00's or faster then the 275/60 would be better choice because once you get that level of performance and beyond the cars like 28" tall tires better. The 275/60's are narrower than the 275/50's(even though it seems they should be same from the numbers!) and fit without as much bulge.

One of the local guys was able to fit 325 x 50 with some massaging of the fender opening. Don't know how wide his wheels were.
I have 275 x 50 on stock 85 GN wheels widened to 9.5", however drag radials are not suited for the interstate - wear too fast. I'm going to try 295 x 50 on the 9.5" rims due to unavalibility of street tires in 275 x 50.

an important factor will be how centered your rearend is from the factory. alot of these cars are off to one side or the other. My car was a little off to one side . I ran 275/50/15 BFG an MT radials it would only rub the rear frame rail when i made a sharp turn HTH.
