I finally got the wife's blessing to spend a little money on the GN. Other than the cost of the rebuild. I've already upgraded fuel pump and regulator, hotwired Walbro 340 w/ Billet AFPR, RJC power plate, new coil pack, plug wires and plugs will go in as soon as the motor is done. Trying now to decide on which turbo to use. Looked at ta49 and te44 but now thinking maybe bigger to support future upgrades! Is this a good idea?? Injs will be upgraded to 50lb. What's the biggest turbo I can run with the stock intercooler, for now, and still have good street manners?? Thanks!

I would go with either the TA49 or TE44. The TA49 is stock appearing and the TE44 is not. Both turbos are GREAT for street and strip, and work well with a stock converter. Anything bigger you will need a converter.

just do it!

Thanks Rob, I've heard the same thing several times so I guess I'm on the right track! Just want to make sure there's a little room to grow.

If you can afford both Turbo & IC do it, my V4 really woke the car up and made the most of the TE44. As for the stock look, who cares 9 out of 10 people don't know the difference anyway. These turbos will take you into mid 11's, if you want faster look at a bigger turbo and beg the wife for $700. more for the converter.:D

I put a TA49 on my 87GN about 8 months ago. I haven't made it back to the track, but it's a LOT stronger now....stock intercooler...stock heads...stock torque converter.

If you go bigger on the turbo, you will want a different torque converter....and a downpipe... The TA49 and the TE44 will spool like mad with the stock converter. It really depends on what you want, and how much you want to spend. These cars can get expensive very quickly.

With the TA49/009 injectors/LS1 MAF/Trans+/Extender chip/Ported elbow w/ 2.75" downpipe, I "figure" that I could run low12's/high 11's with what I have (max boost/race mode)....this is after I box the rear control arms and put some good bushings in there. It may take a change in intercoolers to get there....at least a "big neck", but mid 12's should be happening where I'm at now. So far my best 60' has been around 1.88...ran a 13.40 at 99mph, but that was with stock turbo and stock MAF running a RA93 street chip.

There comes a point where your street/strip car becomes more of a strip/street car if you know what I mean. For a daily driver you can't beat the TA49/TE44. The TA will go in easier since you can easily bolt on your stock (adjustable) WG actuator...the TE44 requires some modifications or a new WG actuator. The TA does have the removable inlet cone...I went with a billet piece there...the TE's inlet is one pc with the turbo compressor.

You'll also have to decide whether you'll want to stay with the Garrett .63 exhaust housing or go with a new housing. (I sent in my old Garrett housing for the new TA49)

One other thought....I would recommend John Craig/Limit Engineering on the turbo. Believe it or not, the price was cheaper going through Quad Air/Red Armstrong. Just give Quad Air a call. My turbo was actually drop shipped straight from Limit Engineering.

I went from a stocker to a TA60 even with the stock D5 convertor it spooled like mad, 1 step above theTA49, and it works on the street extremely well.

A buddy of mine ran 11.50s @ 121 with a TE44 with head work cam and so on. You will like the TE44.

hey not to but in or anything but do you know the rest of your friends set up?

I have what I would think is a fairly strong setup but everyone seemed to estimate my trap speed at 110 or so which is alot lower then your friends
is his car stripped or anything?

thanks and sorry to cut into the conversation

Carl, I wish i new what was all done to it also. This buddy of mine is very sneeky, all i know was he had a 3000 stall, 206-206 cam, ported heads and intake. I learned alot from him but you know how it is he wouldn't tell me everything. He sold the car last year and bought a GS. Sorry wish i new what was all done to it.

i would get the heads fully ported-

that will give you a solid 40-60 horses (the same amount of horsepower if you added a turbo)and you wont have to turn the boost up to gain the power-

a bigger turbo will only make more power than the stocker IF you turn the boost up past 20psi-

i have a guy here in independance missouri that will port heads, install new valves, and flow them for max CFM at his house for around 500.00-

and the best thing is the power is always there :)

Me too..been about 1-2 years ago for me but I went with PTE-51 turbo & stock D5 & didnt seem to be much differnt lag,,maybe a lil more but def not bad.Im sure with a converter it would help but def not a neccisity..id get a nice intercooler after or when you get the turbo & all will work out good..I couldnt tell much difference at all from stock to 51 turbo but intercooler was a big difference..I went V2 front mount & I love it..I wish I had either used a 52 or really a TE-60-61 from john craig with a garrett 82 housing instead of the PTE housing..everyone always wish they had something they dont though.Im happy with mine for now I guess..next head porting one day..

how much you got to work with? i rode in a friends car recently that has a rebuilt motor (.020 overbore, PTE FMIC, champ irons, 218-218 cam, FAST etc) and hes running a q trim 70 and honestly the spool up wasnt bad at all. maybe 2-3 seconds max from a 5-10 mph roll. i wasnt sure how i was gonna like the spool of a bigger turbo but when he hit full boost (~24 psi) all that when straight out the window. now i cant wait for my new motor and either a 70 or 45a turbo. i think he was only running like a 3200 stall converter but i could be mistaken. defiately was NOT unstreetable. was running 110 octane but said he runs about 17 psi on 93. he drove to and from track BTW. with some alky i bet his car would wake up a lot. he was turning mid 120s traps and had 10s for sure if he hadnt let off at the top end. just some things to think about so you dont buy turbos twice. get some good heads and a cam on the engine and put a good, nicely sized turbo and converter on it and you will be happy in the long run IMO.

HEar the GT66 is sweet, get a convertor next year..

Buy once is the motto,go BIG

Thanks to all that replied to this post. I've read them all and believe me, I'm soaking up all the good advice. There are just so many options, I feel like a kid in a candy store!! Looks like the ta49 is best for me right now based on what I've seen and because I'm gonna run the stock intercooler and converter (for now). Also, this car will be driven on a semi-daily basis to work and back, 50 mile round trip, so I need good street manners. Thanks again and I'm sure I'll have more questions along the way!!

I bet you can go with a te60 or a 51 turbo like me & be very very streetable..like i said earlier i could hardly tell much difference than stock..im also running stock d-5 converter...im sorry but id skip on a lil bigger than the 49 & all will be ok till you can afford a converter..call john craig & let him steer you in the right direction..he wont tell ya wrong..very good guy..
