Ok, I know that everyone uses the sureflow, and I've heard of people using one from a ford pickup (?). But i have all these pumps laying around and was wondering if any of them would work for an alky kit. The ones I have: Stock tr pump, 88lph ford pump, stock lt1 pump, stock 1st gen turbo DSM pump, and some windshield sprayer pumps. Thanks.

Not a good place to be cheap since your engine is relying on it to protect it. First time you pop a head gasket from being cheapo.. you'll wish you had a different game plan.

I will be cheap on a lot of things.. on this stuff.. one has to draw the line.

Use a windshield washer tank and pump. thats the ultimate cheapo.. I wouldnt.

All the pumps you listed can be used with denatured and lots of lube. Then play with jetting. And you'll need a solenoid.. 84 rite..
 
I didn't mean "cheap" as saying that I wouldn't go out and buy a new pump or anything, bit meant it by saying that I have all these pumps laying around and was wondering if any of these would work. If not then that's fine. Just couldn't see going out and spending more $$ on something I already have. That's all. And it is an 84 so I know about the solenoid...siphoning effect, etc. So are you saying that any of these fuel pumps would work? Or would I be better off spending the $$ on a new one or kit? What kind of lube are we talking? Thanks.
 
Since you mentioned being "Cheap" I thought I would put this idea out for the experts.
Instead of using a solenoid to prevent siphoning, why not a Tee and check valve. The valve would close when the line is pressurized sending the alky into the engine but once a vacuum was applied to the line it would open enough to stop the siphon. The only drawback I see to it would be a slight vacuum leak.

Just an idea I came up with to solve someones problem of a siphon on their intercooler washer tank sprayer.

I did a search on the siphoning problem, and it seems a check valve won't work. I guess it still leaks :confused:
 
Let try a different angle

Ok.. how bout looking at things a little differently. One advantage the Shurflo pump has on a DIY kit is the ability to allow pressure adjustment. Vs the others you have no way to adjust pressure. Unless you buy electronics to do so.

Ultimately, money spent on fittings, bracketry, mounting, time, hassle and questionable performance.. its not worth the headache to save a few bucks.

Can you use those pumps to pump alcohol. Yes.. for how long.. dunno.

I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying, I am not sayign to put the check valve in line, I am saying to put it on a Tee so when there is vacuum applied to the line it will open and when pressure is applied it will close. The vacuum leak would still be a problem though.
 
I believ the flojet was the pump used in the Jay Carter system years back. They are a little more $$.

I havent tested one of these pumps, or put one into service so I dont know about theyre longetivity. Tho flojet has a very good reputation.

Also companies like Welden, Aeromotive, BG, Essex, etc all make alcohol pumps.. but theyre over the $200.00 threshold on a pump.
