That things downright scary. thats why Im really glad im on this side of the fence cause our military has some lethal chit. how exactly does that thing work and wat does it mount to?

It was my understanding rail guns worked off electromagnets to fire the projectile. That's why it gives such crazy distance and accuracy. You gotta love weapons technology.

yup...charge up two side by side rails and it will fire a projectile really, REALLY, far. They are mounting them in the new destroyers. At the end of the Second Transformers movie that is what the S7 agent calls for to shoot the robot on the pyramid. I know for a fact that they mounted one on a sea going Navy ship, but no idea what phase the project is in now as it went classified as soon as it put to sea with it.

now im gonna go out and watch the 2nd transformers movie. nice. that thing basically says "Fuk with the US military and will meet death quickly" gotta love america and its military

Yeah, the railgun is being tested just a few miles from where we live, Dalgren Weapons Base. Real neat. Got a buddy who's working on the design right now. It's going to change the face of the conflict anywhere. The railgun uses no explosives at all so it will be safe for our troops to fire....the one major problem now is making the energy system small enough to fit on a ship....so far, no luck, it's got to be reduced dramatically in order to ship out in the field. You should see how big the energy pack is....no way to fit it on any type of ship or move it to the battle front.....many more design problems to be solved first....may take a lot of time. It uses electromagnetic energy to lauch a projectile a long, long way....the volocity of the the bullet is so great that it doesn't need any explosives in the head of it....the projectile volocity alone will devistate the enemy target. Neat design....love it!

They even have a gun now that shoots 25mm bullets at an enemy that hides behind walls, cars, buildings, trees, etc. The bullets have small chips in them and are very, very explosive, and timed to go off OVER the wall, or AROUND the obstruction and explode right in the enemy's face.....this all can be computed/set by the person firing the weapon in just five seconds. The gun only holds four bullets.....the explosive power is equal to an RPG. Wonder how long before some ass will sell these weapons to the enemy to use against us, like the cowards have done time and time again.

Yeah, sure, we have the best in weapons and we know how to use them, so how come we lose every damn war we fight in? Vietnam would have been won in a heartbeat if it weren't for the idiots sitting behind their desks in congress. Same for Afganistan.....our biggest mistake is to let the politicians run the war instead of the brave men and women who know how to really fight a war. I've kind of lost faith in our ability to wage a WINNING war....with this idiot president vacationing his way out of every conflict but still walks away with a Nobel Prize.....real nice. And to hear that idiot General P in charge of our troops over there whine to the U.S. that we are NOT winning....real nice vote of confidence.....the previous guy in charge was a go getter and knew how to fight. Too bad the idiot in the White House fired him....only because he doesn't know anything about wars......this country.....due to our political system in control of our military...are in sad shape. I feel bad for all of our boys over there that has to fight now with that BIG VOTE OF CONFIDENCE from that stupid general. I would have shot the SOB!

We had superiority in weapons in the Korean War, but Mr. Truman fired McGuarther because he thought McGuarther's ideas of really fighting a war hard and fast was no good. So, look what we are dealing with now......

The first Iraq war could have been won easily and the second one we lost so many in could have been avoided....but .....NO.....Mr. Bush promised the Kuwait President that he would only drive the bad boys out of Kuwait and not invaid Iraq....Bush wanted to go all the way to Bagdad and wipe out that phsyco Hussein.....but the UN and Kuwait just wanted the enemy driven out....see how easy we did that? And then, look what happened.....the second Iraq war.

The other countries now are bullying us because they've seen what a whimp the idiot in the White House is......you mean we swore on a stack of Bibles that we'd defend anyone who attacked our allies??????? Really??????? Then how come North Korea is still on the map.......they shelled South Korea and killed all of those innocent people.....and we are going to defend them with our military superiority????? Again, politics and cowardness come into play.

I've always been upset by the fact that the Vietnam war was lost....I worked for years on lots of weapon designs/improvements, tanks, bridges, rocket propellant design, etc., and thought there's no way we can loose.....you wouldn't believe the stuff I've seen at Fort Belvoir during those years, just incredible technology to overcome the enemy........until my Dad got over Vietnam as an advisor and was bitching bigtime about the constant red tape, permission to fire, permission to defend yourself, etc. It was just incredibly rediculous....plus, we were fighting a very smart, canny enemy on thier soil.....but I still believe with all of our gloreous weapon superiority we can win any war if the damn politicians would just stay on thier long vacations. Just my opinion. And stepping off my soapbox.

Maybe someday that will be how we launch spacecrafts to orbit. That would something.

No, it is on a ship and out to sea already. The CO of the ship made a big speech and everything. This project is farther along then you thought.

EDIT: trying to find the article now, but it wasn't a front page article and it basically just said that the gun had been mounted and that they couldn't reveal anything more as it was now classified. Frustrating not being able to find it though.

Well, I can't find it on the Navy Times site, so I will just have to see if there is an old edition laying around the base somewhere. It was in the October or November issue....but until I do, I will have to retract what I said!
