I need 1 last gift for my boys ages 8 and soon to be 12.

They have had the PS2 for a few years and its time to upgrade.

They want a 360.... Is that the best one to upgrade to and why?

360 hands down. Its alot faster than ps3. Although I dont have 360 I have played it many of times and it is great. your kids would love it. Or you could get them a gas powered AWD r/c car:biggrin:

PS3 hands down. Blu-Ray player, Internet browser, even upconverterts regular DVDs to HD. Free playststion network too.

XBOX 360 by far just based on the game library. Sure PS3 has Blu-Ray, and that's why you'll pay twice as much for one. An 8 and a 12 year old can survive without Blu-Ray capability, unless you want to use that feature for yourself.

I was a diehard Sony fan through the PS2 era but decided to give Microsoft a try when the new consoles came out and PS3 was going to cost $600. I don't regret it one bit. PS3 has a few great games exclusive to their system (I can count them on one hand), but other than that 360 wins by a mile in the game department.

A word of advice, 360s have been known to have hardware issues which require sending it off to Microsoft for repairs. They have a 3 year warranty so you don't have to worry about paying, but it can be a pain to be without your system while they fix it. Only "insiders" and tech nerds know about this right now, but a newer version of the 360 has just appeared on store shelves. Nothing is different on the box or the look of the system itself, but they have shrunk the GPU chip on the motherboard which results in much less heat and stress on the system and will reduce the occurance of these hardware errors that have plagued earlier 360s. You want to peek through the window of the XBOX carton in the store and try to find a console labeled "12.1A" on the back for power consumption. This will be the newer console with the updated motherboard. Older consoles will be rated 14.2A.

I just picked up a new one at Fry's Electronics today. Not all stores have these new versions yet (codenamed "Jasper" 360s). You can also try to judge by the manufacture date which you can view through the same hole in the box, 10-23-2008 an above is the best bet for the newer more efficient console.

The only other decision you'll have to make is which package to get, XBOX 360 is available as "Arcade", "Pro", and "Elite".

No problem. I added a little more info about the different "packs" that 360 comes as, I think I might have edited that in while you were already replying.

Also right now they have various "holiday bundles" where it comes with 2 games for free.

I don't think they'll ever fix it completely, the internal design is just not engineered properly. But with each hardware revision, the chips will get smaller, produce less heat, draw less power, and hopefully the issues become less frequent. Cramming these powerful graphics machines into small plastic boxes and trying to keep the fans quiet just doesn't add up, but that's what the average consumer expects.

You can be fairly confident with purchasing a 360 these days. The original consoles dropped like flies, tons of failures. The Falcon version (most of what you'll find on shelves right now) were much more reliable and had a smaller CPU chip, which helped a little but the CPU isn't where most of the heat comes from. Now these Jasper consoles are improved even further with a smaller GPU and some other chips on the board have been relocated to prevent overheating.

Just for the sake of mentioning it, I went through 2 or 3 Playstation 2s because the lasers would crap out and stop reading discs, so nothing is perfect. Sony learned from last generation and made the PS3 more reliable, now Microsoft is the one having the hardware issues.

Keep your 360 in a well-ventilated area (don't lock it in your media cabinet) and don't turn it on-off-on-off all day long (too many heat cycles) and you'll be fine. If all else fails at least they extended the warranty to 3 years it's just a bit of a pain sending it to them for repairs.

I am up with the baby so excuse me if this does not make sense.
I have have two 360s, a launch unit which failed when playing Bioshock
and an Elite unit that Sharon bought me as a back up. The 360 does have a great game library but you should check and see what games your boys are interested in before closing the deal. For online gaming the xbox's live network is better than the playstations at this time.

We also have a launch playstation 3 that we have never had the slightest problem with. It is the highest recommended next gen / Blue Ray player out.
We really like watching movies so buying this was a no brainer.
The PS3 has built in wireless as a opposed to the xbox having to purchase a $100 add on. If you are going to be hard wired to your INTERNET or if your boys are not going to have access this will not matter.

If the boys want the 360 then that is what I would get them.
If this is also for you and you have a 1080P TV and love watching
hi def movies, then you should consider the PS3.

BTW the HD DVD Xbox add on (dead technology) is junk.
Even if it is cheap I would not recommend it.
I think it sped up the failure on my unit.
The early units were plagued with crappy power supplies and GPUs.
IMO the extra attachments overtaxed an already poor design.

IHTH and is a little clearer than mud.

PS3 hands down... We have all of them... Wii, all the PS's, and the both xbox's! I personally rather have a Wii than the Xbox360... Wii's are awesome!

PS3 wins hands down IMO between those two! If you buy an Xbox I bet you will buy a PS3 later and the Xbox will go to the wayside...

Some of these are the resons that I got a PS3. If I never played a game again, at least it will serve as a Blue ray player. I had both old systems and at least one of my X-box's failed and never had an issue with PS2.

I went through 3 XBOX 360's in about 1.5 months... the first was dead out of the box, the second died after one race in Forza 2, the third was toast 2 weeks after setup. Junk! I am getting a PS3 in a week or two.

xboxs are only good for better online play - but it comes at a cost. PS3 online play is free, and stable if you have a good internet connection.
I don't think I know a single friend who owns an xbox that doesn't get the dreaded red light every 6-8 weeks.
I've had my ps3 since early 07 and it still works great.
Theres no difference in game selection, IMO all xbox only games are crappy, all the best games (COD,GTA) are available on both systems. Plus the blu-ray is really nice to have.

For kids that young the 360 is the way to go. There's no point in getting a PS3 because they won't use half of the features it provides. However, you may like the fact that they can play their old PS2 games on it. In the end it comes down to what type of games that interest them. Figure that out and then the decision will be much easier.

And some of you guys have terrible luck with dying 360s. I work for GameStop (not a store) and the RRoD (red ring of death) isn't THAT big of an issue as it used to be. Don't buy into the paranoia. Most 360s on the shelves have no issues whatsoever.
