Has any ever used header wrap? I am thinking about wrapping my header and Down Pipe in exhaust wrap this should lower my under the hood temps, but I think it may cause my intake charge to heat up. Has any one tried this?

you might get a different reply, but i have asked this question before and i have to come to the conclusion of nay on the headers and yeah on the DP, the thing about wrapping the headers is that for one you are taking a chance of oil dripping on the headers and starting a fire, the other thing is i have read that many people have said that there headers have gotten so hot under the wrap and becuase they have had no way the vent they have actually crystalized.

no on the wrap, holds moisture, looks like crap, get jet hot works better, looks better, lasts longer and usually has a guarentee. all aftermarket manufactures void warranty if you wrap headers

my friend did it on his big block dart. i think it looks pretty cool, water temps stay maybe 5 deg cooler, no changes other than that, and about $100 missing from his wallet. not to mention that stuff REALLY itches if you get it on your skin. after about 2 months of having it on his headers its already getting hard and brittle, and the car is rarely driven. probably made 15-20 passes, maybe 2 nights worth of crusing around. i can't see where you would want to do it.

i don't think the downpipe would be worth it either, it cold air flowing over it from the fender, any benefits would be negligable. maybe rubber and plastic pieces in that area would last a bit longer. but i can't really see it helping. unless you like the look, then by all means do it.

Nay.

Looks butt-ugly, will soak up oil & fluid spills which could later catch on fire

Save up $$ for a proper coating.

Even rusty headers look better than wrap, IMO.

Good looks don't win races;) and I was intresded in wrapping the down pipe which I has seen a few guys do. But yesteday I saw a picture and a guy had his headers wrap on a GN I had never seen that before so I was curious had any one tried it. The biggest thing would be the fire risk because of oil leak or somthing, that wouldn't be cool.

i wouldn't worry about the wrap its self catching on fire, maybe the oil thats drips on it. best bet there, keep your motor clean.

i think its made out of a fiber type material, like fiberglass and isn't flamable. my friend with the dart tryed to light it on fire with a setteling and couldnt' do it.

i don't think its a BAD idea, but theres no way i would pay the $100 to do it. i don't think its wroth it.

we used the jet hot type coating on the inline six turbo motor at the shop where i work it cut the temp on the outside of the tubing from 620 to about 350 degrees . well worth the investment,it also looks nice even after much street driving

Yeah, that seems the best way too go with the headers(coating) I am looking into having them painted.Improved look and performance with no drawbacks other than paying for materials!

Ditto what Anthony K said

Been there done that, (not for myself, years ago, a customer insisted on it, 6 months later I was removing it & replacing the headers)
