200 4r transmission case

This is probably a silly question but do the casting numbers on top of the tranny bell housing have any significance?

Most I've seen usually start with the number 4 and some have what looks like an 'x' followed by an asterisk. Do these castings identify anything?

Probably do to the foundry that cast them. Other than that, the differences are the bell housing and whether it is universal or bop only.
