I got most of it apart because it would not go into 3rd or reverse. Things look pretty good except for the direct drum has a 360 deg dark band around the middle of the drum. There is also a corresponding blackened area around the center part of the band. I am hoping to get pictures attached so you can see. In doing the air tests upon dis assembly all was good except for the direct clutch test failed. So far all clearances were in check and nothing severely burned. I have more to inspect though. What do you think about the problem and what I have found? Any thing else I need to check for?

THANKS, PAUL

I would be concerned that the drum isn't flat. What else would it rub just the middle like that? How much clearance were you seeing before disassembly? Are you using the spring in the servo for when the trans shifts out of 2 into 3?

The direct clutch and or low/rev clutch us where your problem will. Be. Drum not perfectly flat but most aren't. The black band could be from lack of lube. If that's an alto band they aren't the best for the lining being even across the strap. If it shifted good 1-2 don't worry about it.

Ok thanks. What is a better band to use than the alta?
I had .040"-.060" on the servo before the drum would not turn. I am using a spring in the servo from the CK kit.
The 1-2 shift was never as crisp/sharp as I wanted it and it would not go into 3rd.
The direct drum is smooth without any grooves or ridges, can I just reuse it and buff the burn ring off?

If you want to send me the drum I can turn it so it's flat. As Lonnie said most aren't flat. I've also seen a lot of taper on them.

Bison, how much is too much? I will try to measure and determine if it is tapered. What is the turnaround time? Thanks

You said direct clutch air check failed. Then that's your problem. That's 3rd and reverse. Inspect the seals closely.
