I've got a '01 f-body 4l60e car making int he rang of 400rwhp and 400rwtq. It will see about a 125 shot of gas in the future. I don't even feel like trying to make the 4l60e last. That gets expensive fast. I know a turbo350 is a good option strength wise, but i want OD. I've got a few ?'s about the 200R4 and figure you guys probably have the answers.

Will a locally rebuilt 200R4 be strong enough in the long term for this street/strip car(dailt driver currently)? By local I mean a place locally that does alot of race cars and such but is much cheaper than people like Yank or FLP.

Will I be able to use my aftermarket converter I use with my 4l60E?

What controls the shifts on the 200R4?

Could I re-use the pan from the 4l60E?

Any other useful info for me?

Any help is appreciated.

Here is were you need to go

http://www.2004rperformancecenter.com/ If you want one that will last with 400hp+ You won't beat the product or service any unless it is one that is affilated with PTS and there are a few. Where you located? As far as reusing the t/c I'm not sure, but the pan is a definate no go. The shifts are controled via the TV cable, valvebody, pressure and govenor, the only thing electronic is the t/c lock-up. I'm sure there will be others more knowlegable chiming in to help, 'til then you can do a search on this board for info previously posted, there is quite a bit of good stuff on it.

Heheheh

I think you did very well!!! LOL :D

Seems like Bruce Toelle is the 200R4 guru.

But you're giving away alot of tuning by giving up on the E series tranny, if your really serious about Fast then you'd look at a 4LE8.
You'll never get a hydralic valve body to work like the PCM stuff.

I have several 4L60Es in F-body cars that make much more than 500 rwhp. The switch to the 200 is not cost effective unless you are making much more than 500 rwhp like maybe for example 650+ then I would consider a swap. If you want a drop in a 2004R that uses your converter for the LS1 engine then plan to spend about 4K for the 2004R. I also do 2004R conversions for F-Body cars but it would require a 2004R converter. Also 2004R will be manual valve body only no automatics. The 4L60E is the least expensive option and will handle the power level you describe. I build and sell 2004R, 400, PG conversions and have for months. If you would like to give me a call would be glad to help you with some options.

Hello,

I registered just so that I could reply to this thread and also take part in future discussions on the 2004R.

I am in the process of having a 2004R installed in my F-body (which was built by Mike Kurtz and is being installed by MTI, an LS1 performance shop). My engine is a stroker LS1 that was putting down about 495 RWHP all motor, and is probably going to be pretty close to 700 RWHP on the gas if it were still going through my old M6. From what people know on this board, is this transmission going to live? I will also be running a Yank 3400 extreme convertor with this setup. From what I have heard, Mike builds very strong transmissions, which is why I am paying $$ to have this installed in my car.

Thanks!

Mike has skillZ should be no problem. The TV cable thing is the only tricky item. Best done with a manual VB and no cable.

Thanks for the reply. Does that mean that the tranny will be up to the torque? My understanding is that it is, but I did not think to check with the Buick guys until after I decided (and put down money) to go this route.

I have also heard the issues about the TV cable - that slight problems there = dead trans. But I would rather have that than the pure manual VB.

my silver limited makes over 740 flywheel torque and have had mike kurtz's tranny in the car for 14 months-
NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM!!
just make sure the tranny was built for the power your going to have-
HTH

Cool then! Good to hear that. My motor on spray is probably going to be a bit more torque than that (probably 800 or even higher flywheel torque; stroker LS1s on spray are notorious for sick amounts of torque), but I will not be spraying it that much, so I hope to have something that can live.

Off the subject, I wish GM would build something like the 6-cylinder in the GNs again. Or shoot, for that matter not kill the f-body. D*mn nice cars.

yeah no kidding-

totally off topic here , but dodge is bringing back the ALL MIGHTY HEMI and doing a V10 1500 pickup, and a turbo neon.....

SO WHY CANT BUICK/ GM DO KICK A$$ SH!T LIKE THIS??????

hmmm wouldnt it be nice for GM to make performance parts to bolt onto the new 3.8's and also fit our old 3.8's

ie aluminum blocks and heads-- stroker cranks/rods and the such??

actually it would be nice if the new cars came out with stock parts that would be upgrades for our GN's-- heads, rods, block- ect--- but i guess im living in a fantasy thinking that GM will make interchangeable parts

good luck with the tranny-

drive it like you stole it!!
