Just bought a car and drove home 1+hrs. Tranny seemed sorta lazy at 1st, around town. Out on the highway doing 70mph no problems...shifted in/out of overdrive ok...no slipping. But, once home, cruising around town, upshifts were "lazy" and almost a double engagement for every shift (1-2, 2-3)...but still no real slipping. Automatic downshifts seemed late and even 2-1 shift at nearly a complete stop. It was late and dark so didnt check fluid (i know, I know) but hoping low fluid is culprit...any hope for this or am I facing a rebuild? Thanks!

Slide bump type shift.?

"slide bump" shift sounds about right. The fluid level was a bit low...but then I added about a 1/2 qt and now i'm too high...

Anyhow...started searching internet and saw alot about adjusting the TV cable.

I grabed a Haynes manual and adjusted the cable...1st with it all the way released (all the way in) since I couldnt get it to come out with WOT maneuver...actually could'nt pull the cable out with throttle linkage...hence no full WOT despite cable appearing "free". I took it for a ride and it held gears real long and firm shift. I then held the release button and did the WOT manuever and it set the TV cable almost to where it was initially....and the poor shifting returned. I ran out of time but am gonna push the cable adjuster in a couple notches until I have reasonable comprimise of full WOT and decent shifting.

Any concerns with what I'm doing (adjusting it in a bit more manually)? Any reason why it seems to adjust too far (to the point of too early, lazy shifts) when performing the adjustment "by the book"?

No problem with adjusting manually. Slide bump and or early light throttle shifts are indicators of TV adjustment. Fine tune it and sounds like your all good.

Most overfill the Trans up to 1qt. when using the stock Filter w/top pickup point. Helps prevent cavitation with a hard launch.

I adjusted the TV cable manually...essentially pressed button and pushed the cable in towards the back of the car a notch or two from where the WOT maneuver set it. I verified that the throttle would still hit its stop. Took it for a ride and it felt better overall but still slow to shift into 1st gear upon stoping...still feels like its driving forward momentarily when stoped. Thinking if I push the cable in another notch, the throttle linkage will not go to WOT.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

When adjusting the TV cable moving in torward braket makes shift later and firmer. Adjusting it out makes earlier softer shifts. 2004r are common for 2nd band and 3rd clutch failure. One way to make sure if you need rebuild is pull pan inspect for metal or clutch material. Even if you arent planning on hopping car up I would recommend rebuild w/Transgo shift kit and ATRA upgrades for 3rd clutch capacity

I adjusted the TV cable a bit and the upshifting seems better...not great...but much better.

The biggest complaint I have now is coming to a complete stop, the transmision is late to downshift (or unlock?)....nearly stalling the car before it shifts into 1st gear.

Anyone think this could be the torque converter or solenoid?

I wish I new of a competent tranny shop locally to troubleshoot this for me...really ruining the "new car purchase" experience...particularly when the wife is always asking why i'm tinkering after spending so much money on "an old car"....

wow....excellent write up that completely sounds like what I'm experiencing. I'll post back once i have a chance to perform the opperation.

Thanks!

Tcc

I have the same problem and was thinking of rebuilding my tranny, I am glad i searched and found that, cause i would be really mad if i had it rebuilt and the same problem persisted...Thank you all for the info!

so I finally got around to replacing the TCC solenoid and the one the GM dealer gave me doesnt match whats in the tranny...tranny possiby changed or altered at some point?

Referencing the article and transmision electrical controls schematic at link to Monte Carlo SS.com back a few posts, my car has both the 3-4 Pressure switch AND 4th clutch switch...consequently not matching either tranny.

Anyone know what GM part # TCC solenoid I need?

essentially, red wire goes from TCC to external connector. Black wire goes to3-4 pressure switch then external connector. White wire goes between the 3-4 pressure switch and the 4th gear switch. Oddly, there are 3 wires from the vehicle harness to the external connector with only 2 terminals comming through the case. It all looks factory...no splices that I can see...

Thanks for your help...

I gotta look...didnt know where to look prior to now. I grabbed the number underneath the embosed "Hydramatic" on the driver side...presumably a useless casting number. I'll crawl under there tommorow and hopefully find out whats in my car...

Thanks!

There were many different harnesses, some with only one Pr. switch, some with 2, some had Temp switches etc.. One of the longtime builders may know what you have Chris, Dave, Bruce etc..
It wont hurt anything to splice the wires & use a Universal solenoid but, if you want factory they can probably tell you what car to look up.
Welcome, Todd

I've located the tranny (300-871CZF 0586) and valve body (CZ-5 in paint stecil) ids....they are CZ indicating 86-88 Monte SS... My car is an '87 Monte SS (I know im on the wrong site but best "tech" forum I've found) so maybe these are the original parts?

Can anyone shed some light on what Delco TCC solenoid I need? Could it be something you turbo Regal guys have come accross? I'd much rather plug and play rather than splice in something but would do so if I needed and was comfortable with an explaination what I was doing or bypassing.

I cant seem to get the correct GM TCC solenoid. The one the dealer located for me does not have the same harness/connectors as whats in the car. I'd like to keep it stock for reliability purposes (no splices etc) but wouldnt completely resist altering the wiring if i knew what I was doing.

My cars red wire goes straight to the tcc solenoid. The black one stops at what i think is a 3-4 switch (small culinder shaped 3 terminal mounted cantelevered towards the back of the trans) then continues to the TCC solenoid. A white wire jumps between the "3-4 switch" then to what I believ is the 4th gear switch (short cylinder on passanger side of tranny with only 1 terminal).

Another odditiy i found was 3 wires going to the external connector and only 2 terminals/wires inside...maybe there is a jumper in the connector that I cant see or some other logical explaination.

I've confirmed the tranny and valve body are "CZ" for 86-88 Monte SS. I cant tell if the trans is original to the car or not....very clean and the pan came down easy. Just got the 83K mile car from 3rd owner who probably hid the problem only allowing a short test drive.

Thanks...getting "down" on my purchase...need to start enjoying the car!

Thanks man...exactly the one I needed...BUT...i delayed and now they are out of stock!
