I am looking at a real nice 78 skylark w/V6, I am thinking of converting it to GN drivetrain.Would the stock trans work? rearend? I would need to have the entire setup done by someone other than myself. Is this feasable or a pipe dream?? what would the cost be (ballpark) thanx Moz/Gary

My dad has been trying to talk me into doing a conversion like this.
It should be real easy if you take your time and get some good wiring schematics for the engine electrical circuits.

Just be careful - if its a v6, it was the non LU "metric" 3 speed turbo 200 trans. Those cars are leaf spring rear, and the front subframe only goes halfway back, they do not have a complete frame like the TR's do. Add the 7.5" rear, and you will twist up the car and break the spider gears in the rear in short order.
Other then that, a great idea!

Its like the novas of the 60s and early 70s,which had bigblock power 396/427over 400 horses. And they held up with the power! I realize the rearends were the bigger units but I do believe if I did go forward with this I would end up going the bigger rearend.

My 87 is a hybrid of sorts. Was a 307/200-c 2.14 rear car before.
You will want to change that trans out too. The 3 speed was built to be light and cheap. I broke mine twice just behind my 307 V8.
There are a lot of things you have to consider when doing a LC2 swap. You will have to change out the fuel system (need a tank, pump, lines, filter, etc). You will need an electric cooliing fan. You will need to get some type of exhaust as well.
My best advice to you, is to get a wrecked/parts car to just have to pull parts off of. If you buy just an engine/trans/rear, you will end up scrounging around for a lot of extra parts.
