Were the 3:42's the only gear in a T-type ? Also, anyone happen to know where to round up a set of them for a 7.5". The rear was changed before we got it and has 3.73's in it. While fun at the track, the cars going back to the street fun time as a driver. Wanna change the gear back and make it as highway friendly as possible. Anddddddd maybe get the speedometer back on track haha.

Yes...3.42's were what came in all the 84-87 TB cars. You can get the 3.42's out of Jegs or Summit. Be sure that the carrier a 3 series carrier and they didn't just put the thick ring gear 3.73 set up on a 2 series. 3 series is for 3.08 and up on the 7.5 differentials. Went thru that when I first bought my 84 T. It had 2.96 gears and the 7.5. Got ahold of an 8.5 housing and axles and swapped the brakes over and added a posi out of a 77 Trans Am and a new set of 3.42's.

you can find a good 8.5 with the proper 3.42 gears and a posi for not much more money than it's going to cost you to buy and install 3.42 gears and a posi in the 7.5 you have now.

Hit up your local u-pull it and look for s-10 trucks with a GU6 code on the spid label in the glove box. Actually the gears from any GM with a 7.5 will work but S-10's seem to be the easiest ones to find better gears in. and just for reference some of the most common codes are

GU1 = 2.41
GU2 = 2.73
GU4 = 3.08
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42
GT4 = 3.73
GT5 = 4.10 or 4.11
G80 = POSI

Also when useing a posi unit from an S-10 or an F body make sure its a 26 spline axle, If I remember correctly 88 and newer S trucks and F bodys used a 28 spline axle.

Thanks for the info yall. I will find my gears. We're not actually worried about putting a posi back in it. Just want the right ratio back in there. It will be getting stripped and repainted the original color too. Heading towards nice dependable driver now. And I doubt it will ever see the track again. Kinda like try and make it survive for a long time now. Not alot of these made as yall know quite well. Thanks...........

I've got a set of 7 & 5/8" 3.42 gears if you need the Scott. send me a PM if you're interested. I've been waiting totear into the rear because of the mess. they're out of a camaro and they will fit nicely.
