86/87 Turbo Seal Replacement??

how do I convert a regular 86/87 turbo to the carbon seal?

I understand it has a dynamic seal now, great..... but I need a carbon seal.

Now looking at the 2 different seals & Backing plates, I see that the dynamic seal backing plate has 3 tangs to locate the seal, while the carbon does not.

Can I machine the tangs out of the dynamic seal backing plate to fit the carbon seal? the diameters should be the same correct?

or is there a 3 tang carbon seal available?

Progress was going good last night until i finished the NDI on the turbine wheel and shaft....... no dice...... turbine wheel is full of cracks.

so i need to look for another 86-87 turbo for parts.

I was really hoping my Rajay would have been in better shape - but the rebuild place said it would cost more to rebuild than to just step up to a more modern unit.

I got mine by posting in tthe WTB section. Cost less than $50 including shipping. Try it, maybe you'll get lucky. I know I did. As far as the rajay upgrade it but get the olsd one back and tear it down to see what's wrong. It may not be as bad as they say.

I think it has to do with the lack of parts available for the Rajay... But I got a lead from a buddy last night, place called Gpopshop... stocks alot of old school turbo stuff so im going to find out soon.
