When upgrading to the 87 ecm and maf, does the maf plug right in or do i have to change the plug?

If you are going to a 87 Maf it will plug right in, the catch is a little large but it should stay in place. I have done this replacement today actually.

it plugs in but the plug is slightly different so i just want to make sure before i start the car.

like posted above the catch is alittle large. it will latch

I need some help with the engine service light engaging when I disconnect the MAT sensor from my intake. I have an 85 which I have upgraded to an 87 ECM. I had added the sensor and kept the stock MAF sensor. I got my hands on an 87 stock MAF sensor and have installed it. When running normal no problems, but WOT causes serious knock. Runs perfect if I disconnect Mat sensor. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have emailed Casper but no responce yet.
Thanks

Gn guy- check the ANDL (ecm)plug under drivers side of stereo housing and insert a jumper between a&b port... with the key off, then it will go into diagnostic mode- it wil flash once then twice (code 12) three times, then if there is a malfunction (code) it will blink that code, then it will flash code 12 again (one blink followed by two blinks- thre times again) and will continue this cycle until you turn the key off or pull the jumper from a & b port... hope this helps...

Is that the same as disconnecting ECM wire at battery? I am ok clearing the code 23. I need to know the fix to eliminate the knock that occurs with the new MAF sensor and the MAT sensor that is added to do the 87 ECM upgrade.
Thanks

Are you running a Hot Air specific chip for your set-up?
Who made the chip?

It has been upgraded to 87 Ecm and I have a Turbo Tweak chip for the conversion.

Code 23-Typical causes for this code include:

1) Defective MAT sensor
2) Open sensor ground circuit
3) Dirty or corroded connection(s) at MAT and/or ECM
4) Open circuit between the ECM and the MAT sensor
5) Defective ECM

you are correct. I have caused the code 23 by leaving the Mat sensor disconnected. I have done this to run the M

I incurred some problems inputing my last reply. I have a happy scenario if I run my stock MAF sensor for an 85 and the installed MAT sensor. When I place an 87 MAF sensor and Mat sensor together and run it is ok till I do some hard runs then she wants to knock. If I disconnect MAT and run hard it does not ping. It seems that the combination causes some issues that I need to fix. Thanks for any ideas to fix.

The MAT sensor is not the knock problem at all. Probablybad 87 MAF. Put a scan tool on your car and post the MAF readings at idle, park and warmed up. Good luck-Brad

Hi Brad
I have a powerlogger attached. This thing runs fine with MAT disconnected and 87 MAF connected but of course engine light and code 23 appear.
Thanks

Brad's right. The 85 MAF will make the car run rich with the 87 ECM conversion....hence when you install the 87 MAF (which will make the car run leaner.....hence the WOT knock) the car is not getting enough fuel for the amount of air it is getting. That said, find a known working 87 MAF and test...the result may suprise you.;)

E-mail me the log when you have time. The board will not allow newer members the ability to post PICS and attachments. Thanks- Brad

Hi Brad
Yes , I am pretty new to the forum. My email is montei47@yahoo.ca. I am pretty new to powerlogger also. I can send you a data file but not sure how to read it myself.
Thanks

The connectors are different. They look the same, but the latches are different. The 87 uses a larger latch, the 85 is smaller. If you don't change the plug, you run the risk of it falling out.

Also, the frequency curve characteristics are different between the years. The 85 curve is around 13% higher than its counterpart as I recall. Also, the IAT sensor is factored into the chip for the 87, where there is no scaling factor in the 85 ECM.
