Before I go to a bone yard to find another 2004R, I was hoping I could get some ideas here first. I have a $500 89 Caprice Classic no rust, creme puff, land yacht with about 65,000 miles on it. The transmission works perfect when cold. The shifts are smooth, quiet, seem correct for the speed and throttle position. Part and WOT shifts seem correct. Torque lock up works. It purrs.
The problems start after about 10 to 15 miles of driving, when it gets HOT. The shift points don't seem correct. Slow speed part throttle down shifts don't happen and the engine (305) will lug unless I give it more throttle than I think it should need and the down shift is then jerky. Up shifts on the highway are a little soft and jerky also when HOT. Manual shifts work. It never slips or leaks....not yet anyway.
The TV cable wouldn't self adjust, changed and adjusted it. Changed the fluid and filter. It was kind of dark but didn't smell burnt. There was a grey coating in the pan and some on the magnet but going on past experiences over the years it didn't look like too much. Pink paint on the valve body by the way. Haven't done a pressure check. Did add a bottle of Lucas Trans fixer in it. It didn't fix it. Hope I didn't make things worse by doing that.
Trany gets hot, oil gets thin, trany doesn't work right. Any ideas?
