How do you ID a 9" Ford housing end for the proper bearing size and brake backing plate?

I have a pre 69' 9" that I had narrowed about 15 years ago and need to get it going again for axles and brakes. I haven't pulled the section out yet but can you tell me if it's that old would it be a 31 spline vs. a 28? Aren't all Detroit lockers 31 spline? I have a D. Locker to install as well.

Another thing. The only Nodular housings I've ever seen had the "N" cast into them. This gent tells me that mine is a Nodular because it has the rib (one only) cast into the front.

TIA,

Roger

I don't think your case is Nodular. Every one I have seen has the N on it, if its a Nodular case. You could call up Strange and ask them.

It will have two ribs if it's a Nodular housing.
FMS makes a Nodular housing without the "N" but it has two ribs it's a new Motorsports case, over the counter not a production case.
P.S
I have both in my garage if you need a pic.

ford 9in

detroit lockers come in all splines, 28 & 31 among others.
so...... looks like you'll have to pull an axle to see.
there are two size bearings for 9in, small mustang type , and large pick up, and LTD type, ( this is the two most common for older axles)
I have had exellent service with Moser Axles, and customer service is prompt, and polite!, he has most everything you will need!.
good luck

OK then. Thanks for the help.

About the tube ends. What brakes go on them? I want drums. How do I tell what ends I have?

What do I measure? Is it just the bearing OD? Isn't the big one 3" ?

9 in

I think the large bearing is just over 3in, and the small one is around 2.5 in, (been a while, so not to sure anymore!)
either way, the backing plate will fit only the specific bearing size, ( the bolt holes are different) so you will need to determine the size bearing, then the backing plate required!,
brake drums will come in different bolt patterns, 4.5in on 5, is standard ford passenger , 5in on 5 is large ford car, and truck.
the bowers # for large bearing is 88128, not sure on the small one.
good luck

9"

If you will get on the strange website or 1 of the other sites that have replacement hsg ends, such as Art Morrison, they will tell U how to measure for the different backing plates and brg sizes.
Morrison has 2 different hsg ends. One that accepts a stock seal and 1 that has to use a sealed brg. I use the 1 that accepts the seal, so if it leaks a seal becomes MUCH cheaper to replace!!
