Got a 2 rust spots/hole. nothing monstrous by all means. Should I bother cutting off patches and paying someone to put them in or just lay fiberglass and let it slide?

I guess it depends on how long your gonna keep the car. Bondo/fiberglass will only bubble and rust through again in a couple years, if that. If you cut out the rust, and lay in a metal patch it will last a LONG time if done correctly. If it were me, metal patch is the way to go...........Hope this helps.

If I laid fiberglass I would cut the rust out first. I do have a friend coming over that went to school for body work and does decent work, and welds for a living. I also found even more rust up on my driver's a pillar where they all do. I have a bad feeling it is soft. I will know when I get the dash out:(

Guys - same issue here, both rear quarters have holes, one side is pretty bad. I have been looking for rust free quarters but pretty tough to find. I like the idea of cutting out all the rust and weld in fiberglass and paint it. Just have to find a good body shop.

Finding that much rust is only the beginning of a sad ending to a great car....

I just got this car and I was aware of the rust but it runs great and I got heck of a deal on it. I wanted a clean, rust free GN but all of those are out of my budget. It sucks to live in the rust belt where salt is used so much on the roads. Hopefully I can get most of the rust out and keep the GN off the streets in the winter.

You guys should look at the inner fender well above the frame, They rust from the inside out there. If there is rust there then you will need to remove the inner fender well to fix. Sorry, but I've been there.:frown:

Well in my case I am seriously considering a "rebody" I found a 83 that's already pretty much gutted and stripped. Dang near bare shell on a frame aside of the odds and ends on the firewall. It does need a driver's floor pan but the rest of it seems solid, no dents either. The question is, where are all the vins??? How much work would it be swapping over all my crap in the shell? I have everything out of mine except wiring, center console, dash and etc., and column. Still got full drivetrain in it, running and driveable, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem to work around. Starting to seem like a good idea so far.

usetaboost - You got any pics of the rusted areas of your car? I would like to compare to my car. I also bought a GN recently and it has rust along the bottom of both doors and rear quarters. I'm going with the fiber glass for now, but will keep looking for rust-free parts in case the rust comes back...this hopefully buys me a couple of years.

+1 he is completely right. you guys just see little holes right now.Wait till you start cutting out that rust. hopefully you dont have t-tops or an astro roof. That just adds to the nightmare:eek: Once these cars start rusting. look out. Dont cover it up with fiberglass. It will come back:( trust me I have been there.I mean I am still there.

well the guy that had the good shell went and sold it to one of his race car buddies-I love it when people do that to me:mad: So what to do now:confused: . I am gonna look around a little bit for a decent shell or parts car, but if I don't find one soon I'm not gonna do a damn thing with it. I will let it sit until I find a REAL body man to help me.

There is no way your car is in worse shape than mine, you drive yours:rolleyes: . I'm too embarassed to even let people see mine let alone drive it. I'm starting to wish I never bought it. But I'm stuck with it cause I'm not gonna put myself in the hole for a 15k car. I know my car won't cost that much to make right. Maybe a lot to finish it right, but I'm not scared to do the work, MY labor is free and my friends labor is cheap. Just gotta feed them!

And I would like to see a "rust free" car. I mean no rust anywhere. A non restored car with not a spec of rust. That's like having a car that no one has farted in:eek: .....that would be special;)

I looked around at the various places you guys spoke of and I do not see rust there. Maybe I'll get lucky and only have surface rust and only a few panels will need to be replaced or fixed. I've got a body guy coming to take a look at it next Friday. The top 3/4 of the car looks great but the bottom 1/4 needs work on the rear quarters and doors.

Rust Repair

Hey Usetaboost.. I Guess It Depends How Bad Your Rust Is. I Usually Cut Out The Entire Rust Area Completly And Metal Patch. If Bot Hqtrs Are Rotted, rockers And Floor Includes,i Would Consider A Re-body.. I Purchases A Rust-free,fla 81 Regal With 46,miles At An Auction. I Hated To Take Apart But The Parts Were Worth More Than The Car. I'm Building An 87 Gn,used Rt Fender And Door, think I'll Hold On The The Complete Shell(origional Paint, not Even A Door Dent) May Be Worth Something Some Day... Good Luck With Your Car..

here's the pics. They were taken at night but the spots I shot were the HOLES. There is light speckled surface rust in a few spots but the rest of the underneath is perfect aside from what has been described.

Rust.

Usetaboost, All The Rust On The Images Looks Repairable By Metal Patching, you "may" Be Able To Purchase Patch Panels For The Qtrs. My Concern Is The Roof Skin, They Rot Out Above Both Doors At The Top,the Just Above The Thin, black Mld. The Seam Where The Quarters Meet The Roof, This Area Is "full" Of Lead, I Did Notice A Crack At That Area On One Of Your Photos.the Lead Would Need To Be Melted Out And See What Is Underneath,it Is Possible To Have Rust Under The Lead,or The Crack May Be From Body Deflection. Metal Patching A Roof In This Area Will Be Tricky As The Heat May Warp The Panel. Your Car Has Alot Of Potential, Good Luck With It,don't Give Up..

So should I continue with what I am doing? I am not to concerned with the hole in the quarter. My plan was to cut that rust out and just fiberglass it unless my friend has time to do a patch panel for me. Getting a patch off a car around here will be next to impossible beings for many years up until recent they salted roads, now I was told by a friend they use some sort of chemical that is non corrosive:confused: . The crack I am sure is from body flex, as all for corners of the roof have them. I don't know what to do about the hole in the door jam. Can I get away with soldering it after I remove the rust? I know I make the car worse than what it is but my father thinks I should use this shell to keep the car as original as possible. The shell is the only body part aside from the trunk that will stay original. I also took aa pic of teh bottom of the passenger door. I cannot tell if it is salvagable or not beings about 5 inches of the lip of the skin is rusted off. Can I bead blast the door and reweld the bottom if there is enough metal? At this point I am considering doing a half assed frame off (don't plan on removing drivetrain, it took me forever to get it perfect as possible), is it worth doing this much work on these cars?
