Found a new day job. More $$$$ but their health insurance costs eats up the increase in pay I would be getting! $206 a week!!! Is there such a thing as an affordable health care plan that you can buy on your own?

Probably most pressing thing is getting a policy to cover the gap on the 90 days before the new plan would kick in. Have done some searching on the web but trying to find out if anyone on here has found a plan that is actually worth it.

Would need a family plan, one child.

Be careful with the online insurances. Do research on the names. Lots of bad reviews. Promise you the world and then don't pay. Once they get your phone number they bug the crap out of you too.

Does anyone have or know about health services accounts? Seems like a cheaper way to go once you get that initial account going.

What really sucks is my current job where I have been for 21 years wants me to stay on part time and be on call for emergencies BUT they will not kick in my health insurance. Told them I will gladly stay on with a flexible part time schedule as long as they allow me to keep paying my for my current policy. Pretty much told me no freaking way. Already giving them a months notice but think I will be bailing completely when that time is up. If they don't give why should I. Extra money would be nice but would rather concentrate on doing a good job at my new place.

The nursing home where I work is actually closing down once all the patients are relocated. They are figuring they won't be able to get someone to only work here a few months so that is why they are giving me the hard time about leaving. Need to take care of my future because there isn't one here. Just figured they need to come up with an incentive to retain my services but they don't see it that way.

well if ya wait a few years "our" Obama care will kick in  Oh I don't think there is such a thing as affordable health ins. It's CRAZY !!

Short answer

No such thing as cost effective health care . I pay over $12,000.00 a year and never go to a doctor but it is good for my family so i keep paying . Some day i will need it and over the years have already paid for any care i get .. Its a joke and my wife is my agent ..so thats with a discount .. Even bigger joke .

Hire a broker to do the work finding a plan. They get paid commission by the ins company so its no more expensive to you. I got 100% coverage family plan, high deductible for $300 a month, me, wife, 2 kids. I think we are under Golden Rule/Humana. Each state is different. Good luck. Cobra is high$$$$, they wanted $1800 a month to do cobra after my wife became a stay at home mom until we found ins on our own. I also pay cash for any dr visits for the wife and 2 deliveries. Cash can negotiate months before the procedure to play hospitals/dr's against each other in pricing somewhat. Even on a cash plan at the Dr, I said, how much discount if I pay it all today now in cash. Another 10% off. Cash talks these days and everything is negotiable in advance.

COBRA is silly high. Does Costco offer something? I use Costco for dental, they actually have a pretty good plan, $200 a year for family of four. The copays are a little higher than other plans I looked at but it's a fraction of the cost which more than makes up for it.

Good luck with finding something. It's a scary thing to think about if something were to happen.

Mark tell them you will stay on part time as long as they DOUBLE your salary to make up for lost benefits.

Part time is like an outside contractor, you pay your own vacations, bennies etc.

You can research online policies from Aetna and other companies with higher deductibles etc.

For 3 people with a reasonable deductible you're probably near the $200 a week anyway.

Mark,

After looking in to open plan healthcare, we opted to pay the $775/mo to continue our corporate healthcare plan after my retirement. The premiums doubled from what I paid while working, but it's still a way better plan for the $$$ than anything we could have got elsewhere. The wife's got a slew of "conditions" that she takes 9 different drugs for, so the 'script plan itself is worth it for us. Life sucks in some ways...

Doing a little research on Cobra and supposedly you have 60 days to sign up for it. If something happens within that 60 days you can still sign up and it will cover you. You then supposedly have 45 days to pay. Might gamble on the 60 day deal and then get a cheap policy to cover the one other month before new insurance kicks in. Anyone ever gamble on the Cobra? No preexisiting conditions in the family except for some chiropractor visits.

Tough starting a new job after being at the same place for 21 years. First day was today and my head is spinning!

Not available in CT. Found a plan with United Healthcare that I might go for. Doing more research on the damn Cobra crap and see that if the business goes belly up that your Cobra does the same thing! People that left before me never even received the required information within the 30 day mandatory notification period so don't get the warm fuzzies about gambling!

 Can't even qualify for a short term deal since I am on meds for blood pressure and cholestorol. Oh well, will put the wife and kid on the short term and hope for the best for me!

Already have all my meds on hand for me and the wife by doing the mail order express scripts deal, so good there.

And doing a little more Cobra research, if the business CLOSES like my old place is Cobra dies with it! Lots of people there think they still are able to get coverage and are being mislead.
