I have got a 92 Mercury that when it shifts into overdrive it just free revs, like its in neutral. The car has 80000 miles on it and has been drove very easy. I checked the TV cable and its adjusted per the manual and the fluid level is fine and doesn't smell burnt.

If I drive the car around in Drive it performs flawlessy without any slippage. I can also shift manually from 1st to 2nd without slippage.

In case there is any confusion I can drive the car around in Overdrive, but as soon as it gets above 45-50 mph and it shifts into OD it just revs.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

In the AOD, the overdrive band applies and the forward clutch releases. If the band/drum is wasted, the servo does not apply it will freewheel. Had one at work a couple weeks ago that the end of the apply pin punched thru the band and did exactly the same thing. Cherry red fluid, no debris in the pan.
