Another reason a 200-4R may not shift at WOT

Hi Folks,

Well, I got some time to dig deeper into the GN we purchased back in December. One of the nagging problems we had is that the car wouldn't shift under WOT. I dug around in the various forums, and the general consensus was that the governor spring was probably missing, and that made sense to me.

Turns out, there's another possible cause for failure to shift at WOT that I found while checking the governor spring (which was happily sitting right where it should have been): the filter was missing its seal! Pulled it out, no seal on the output tube. "Hmm, must be stuck up in the valve body." Um, nope! It was gone. "I'll be..." Put the new filter in with its seal firmly in place, and voila! Shifts like a dream at WOT now. I'm actually a bit surprised the thing worked at all; must have had just enough suction to keep pressure in the system under normal conditions, but couldn't pull enough fluid to shift at WOT.

Cheers,

Bob Moon

Way to go....

I only wish the stuff I run across could be solved so easily....

Again... good find...

LOL! Thanks! Yeah, I got lucky; I pulled the gov out first, all happy that I thought I knew what to expect. Suddenly, thoughts of having to pull the trans apart loomed when I saw the spring happily seated...

It's been so danged long since I last worked on an auto that I had almost forgotten how much I hate working on them. Yep, everybody who pulls a pan should DEFINITELY invest in a drain plug! Even then, once it's all "drained" and you pull the pan, more fluid will spill out, and then the incessent dripping commences, and never stops until the pan goes back on. Lordy, do I ever like manuals! :D
