I am putting on a new DP on my car and it is a few inches short of the cat and needs to be taken to a shop to be completed. I have a friend close buy that owns a shop but the only way I can get the car there is to drive it. I know it will be loud, but will it hurt anything? Thanks Dusty

Friend of mine had nothing but around 10" of downpipe for years:eek:

Thanks for the responses everyone. I didnt think it would hurt, but just wanted to make sure? How loud will it be? I plan on having one of my brothers that is a cop either with me or following me so hopefully I wont have any probelms from the cops.

Ummm, as loud as my track only T, which runs a 3" THDP and nothing else... Much louder than a dump to my ear...

strike

Let's just say that you may not want to drive it around before your neighbors wake up.;)

I drove mine for a year with just a hooker down pipe.Take off slow if your next to a cop. I got stopped one time in Naperville ill but no ticket told them the cat fell off:biggrin: .Nothing like a column shift car pulling up next to you that sounds bad azz and then looking at his taillights.Ok I,ll stop

No!!! you'll warp the valves!! Just like running race gas, it'll burn the valves!!!! ;) Maybe it'll warp the turbine wheel, too!!!

Just kidding, of course!:p

Dp

Yeah make sure you take off slow if a cop is around as it is crazy loud. For a while in my old Gn ran straight out the fenderwell dump and man was that loud you couldn't hear yourself think. The drone was so bad your ear drums would vibrate. Roc87 mentioned Big Ed's old ride , that was a nice GN. You'll be fine just driving it up to get the exhaust done. The funny thing about running straight thru the DP or dump was every car alarm within close proximity would go off.

Hi,
Warp the valves? I don't think so. You could probably have a problem if you ran without manifolds, but anything more, and you will be ok.

I loved the sound of mine when I was only running a downpipe. Sounds like a jet taking off!!!

Mark now owns the "Mutant", Loved Ed's GN, doubt the thing weighed 3k#'s, never did get a chance to ride in it with the two stages spraying:( He drove it years without getting any tickets for loud exhaust (That I know of:eek: ;) )

You can see the "downpipe" aimed right at the control arm:D

I find it funny how some say it will be "crazy loud" because it's not. The turbo acts like a muffler in some regard. The local drag strip required mufflers because of the neighbors, but our turbobuicks were allowed to run open and not break the decibel limitations.

I would say it doesn't sound half as loud as a V8 uncorked, but it is loud enough to get stopped by the local police.

open dump is the only way to roll. i have an electic cutout on mine and the only time i close it is when i see cops or if i fell like going stealth

Fenderwell dump

Mine come straight off the turbo and out the hole in the passenger fender was only a couple inches above right front tire. Seemed to spool quicker no back pressure, but it may have been my imagination. They used to say that type dump burned up the bearings quicker because it caused the turbo to run hotter?? The short pipe seemmed alot louder out the hole in the fender then out the longer downpipe , maybe the shorter plumbing/pipe length had something to do with amplifing the sound??? It sure got people looking around as it probably sounded like a tractor breaking the sound barrier.
