Im just getting into building up 50cc scooters and it seems that Hawaii is loaded with some bad azz scooters

I'm building a 85 honda aero 50 up now for my wife and got all my parts for it from Keoni at vt cycles in Honolulu

I'm in process of buying a 2001 elite 50 for myself now and looking to do a 107cc strocked and big bored motor for it but dont get to go pick it up till saturday :(

just wondering if any buick nutz were scooter nutz also.

I used to be into um a couple of years ago. It was water cooled with a 104 bore. Very fast and lots of fun. I've seen it do 14's in the 1/4 back then but got banned after going that fast. Seems the tires were not certified to go past 90 mph.:( There are many moped shops here so do some shopping before you buy.

I used to get my parts from Cycle Imports. Call and ask for George. Tell him you're a friend of mine and he'll give you a deal. (Retail + 20%:)) 808-952-9253

Hey Red- I started modifying mopeds (scooters) back in the '80's. Back then there were little or no performance parts available. My first Honda, was an '85 Aero. With the stock parts I could go 45+ MPH. Pretty good back then! :)

Though I haven't touched them for years, I still have a '87 Honda Spree with a Dio ('94-up Elite S engine) It has a 72 cc Polini Bore with modified port timing, 28mm Mikuni Carb, Honda ZX transmission(pulley, and clutch assembly), and 8.5 to 1 gears. I don't know what the top speed is right now but let's just say that it's "fast enough"... ;)

I also have an '88 Elite E with a Dio engine (stock bore with some minor porting, with High spd pulley, and 8.5 to 1 gears).

Talk to gokada on this board. He actually had a moped that he ran in the 1/4 (MPH in the 80's I think) before the track banned mopeds to just running 1/8th's.

Go watercooled.

Be warned though, the small wheel base will pull your front wheel off the ground with ease.:D :D :D

that spree sounds like fun :)

my shopping around consited of emailing several shops and see who took the time to give me a good responce ..

steve at vt cycles was the first to reply with a list of stuff that I could use on my aero 50 and with prices of each along with the deal of the more parts bought the more he'd discount the price

so I told him to give me a price for everything he listed and he took around $75 off the total for buying it as a package which I was happy with

I ordered the package and after I recieved the parts other shops started sending me responces so I just told them they need to get on the ball that I had already gotten my parts before they even responded

I cant wait to start building up the 2001 elite (Dio) that I go to pick up saturday

I've already emailed them wanting a list of all parts and prices to do the 107cc stroker and big bore kit on it

from what I've read it seams some are running mid 90's on mph with the 107 kit which is probly faster than I care to go but it should be a blast.

I got a 64cc kit 19mm carb and promo expansion chamber exaust for the 85 aero 50 along with a pulley kit clutch springs different weights for the pulley and so on.. Im building it for my wife so that should be plenty to scare the poop outta her ...lol

you'll know of any links to scooter articles and what not feel free to share them :)

Holy smokes, just how many times does the word "banned" appear in conjunction with your name? :D

It is!... :D

I had a Proma 65cc kit, a Proma expansion chamber pipe, and an 18mm Mikuni carb on my Aero. It will make a huge difference!

Some tips:

Once you get everything together, get a cylinder head temp gauge; I had a VDO on my Aero. I'm not sure of the brand on my Spree. Use it to tune just like you would do with an EGT on the Buick. Too hot and you'll seize the motor. :D

Use an impact wrench on the nut that holds the drive face and pulley assembly. If you don't, you'll risk the nut coming off, and eating the splines on your crank. Ask me how I know...:o :D

Get some higher (numerically lower gears) unless you plan on being a "wheelie king". ;) On my Aero I had 8.5 to 1 gears. I believe the stockers were 12 to 1. A lot of guys here like 7 to 1 for maximum top end.

I agree

most important tool is a temp guage. Next to that, a tach would do good. When tuning, you'll have to watch the rpms to see and feel were the most horses are occuring. You can adjust the transmission accordingly.

Damn, I can't stop laughing!:D :D :D

I've gone over 100 with mine.

When stroking your motor, you'll have to open the crankcase to fit the new crank. While you're at it drill out the oil feed tube and plug the pump with a crankcase plug. If your con-rod pin ain't welded, put a spot there with a tig, then have it balanced. I've seen them move before. Open the intake on the case so that your fingers can fit through them but, be careful not to grind the center support off. Knife edging the centersupport works nice too. Call if you need help. I'll show you the fine art of getting kicked right off your local track.

some good info there...

I know about having to clearence the crankcase and cylinder but the other stuff is good info that I havent read about

as far as gearing for the aero 50 I've been told the gears are getting hard to find for it
I'm gonna get it all together and see how bad it is then I may go on the search for a set of gears if its too crazy

I wanna gear the 107 cc one so there will be no problem busting up some ricers and other slow cars from light to light:D

Try 9.4's. I used to eat some imports with those. 9.4s, some heavy weights, 28 carb, 20% centerspring should be a good start.

well got a email from Steve at vt cycles and it looks like I can go with a 115cc kit for about same price as doing a 107

not too much thinking for me ...if I can have 115 cc that sounds good to me :)

I been out riding around on a metropolitin scooter tonight stretched out at 35 mph ...lol ..... borring :o

ANY OF YOU GOT ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THE 115CC KITS?

oops didnt mean to yell at ya

leaving at 9am to go get my 2001 elite-s :)

I've never had to open up a case. -Too much work! Then again kits larger than 72cc's were not available at the time. :o :D

That 115cc kit should be NUTS!! I also don't know about the 9.4's. Might still be too much gear. Unless you plan on leaning over the bars (keeping the front down) when cracking the throttle. :D

I forgot to add, that on the Aero, as well as the Elite, there is a perfect mounting place for two 2-1/8 gauges (temp, tach).. -Right above the front storage compartment on the right and left side.

Here's a little advise.........

If I were you, I would start with the small bores first. The fan that cools the motor doesn't change, so when adding cubic centemeters it taxes the cooling ability. You'll also notice that the temps will fluctuate in the morning and afternoons alot. And humidity will send your temps high too. If I remember correctly, mopeds with big bores (104) were really tempermental toward the afternoon. They'd run hot and lean in the afernoon, then rich in the morning. The tricky part was finding the sweet spot with out going up and down the jets too much. Also finding where the belt falls down the ramp in conjunction with clutch pulley (spring) can be time consuming.
So start small and work your way up. You don't want to waste too many big bores.

lol
The one I'm going to pick up in the morn is black

and It will be water cooled

I'll do my tunning and learning on the wifes aero with the 64cc kit and on the standard bore motor on the elite along with tweaking some friends bikes before I take on tuning a big mota

have you seen the 125cc one forsale ?

check it out here

Wow! All of this moped talk makes me kinda want to dust off the Spree, and take her for a spin!! :D Anyone got an Arrow Pipe laying around? :D
