Need some advice.
I adopted a kitten about a year and a halve ago. He was walking the street alone and showed up at the house looking for some food. He is the cutest thing you ever saw. About a week ago, he started limping. One of his back legs is noticeably bad/hurt. Either badly strained or broken as he can’t put any weight on it. I feel bad for him as he is struggling and can’t walk and is really play full with a great personality. What should I do? Any advice is appreciated.

I'm no vet, but a pet owner........You should at least take it to a vet for shots to make her a safe kitty.......just a note on the side, I have never been able to walk out of a vet office without spending 100$.......kudos to you for adopting a stray and giving it a home. :)

If its been more than a couple of days and its not getting any better take it to the vet. My dad was a vet for 30 years, and my last 2 cats were strays that adopted me. I'm not one to want to spend money on vet bills, but if it was a sprain then it will start getting better in a couple of days. What the vet will do is grab the leg feel along the bone and see if he can feel a break. If he doesn't feel anything he'll give it a little pressure on each end of the bone to see if its broke. If its broke it will bend, if not its likely a sprain. You can do a little examination yourself.

Yeah, I think "he" adopted me as well.
I tried the "feeling" for a break as well and his leg does not "feel" broke, but who knows.
I am hessitant to take him to a vet as I heard horror stories of $200 plus for a basic evaluation.

My DR's may need to wait for a while.

Try this website-should be near you-

If you did the feel thing and put a little pressure on it and the cat didn't try to take your hand off, its most likely a sprain.

I love cats. When my 5 YO was about 5 months old or so she would follow me around like a shadow. Well when I always went through the kitchen door to the garage I always did the walking and slam the door behind me thing. Yep, you guessed it. I slammed Kittys rear leg one day. I thought it was broken because she went limping under the bed and wouldn't let me touch her. Since she wasn't bleeding I let he sit there for the night. The next morning she was up and walking around like nothing happened. Thank God. Those little bones must have been made out of rubber. Now I just adopted another kitten about a month ago. I got him from the local cat rescue and they do all the vet work real cheap. And the lady said she does it for any cat reguardless of where it came from. Maybe check around the rescues in your area. Mine operated out of a PetSmart on the weekends.

I know what you guys mean on the vet bill. The wifes dog cost me on the average about $50 a month. Damn puppy. I hope he gets cheaper as he gets older.

One more note. Last year I had to take the wife to a pain specialist for some expensive dental work and muscle therapy. So I'm standing there trying to figure out how I'm going to pay for all of it. They gave me credit card application for Care Credit. Its through GE Capitol. It works like a credit card only you have to use it for health care. Heres the good part. You can also use it for the vet. I've charged puppy shots and Frontline on it.

Well, broek down and decided to take the cat to the vet. He had an infection from a somewhat invisible cat bite. He must have gotten into a fight. Nothing broken and he is on antibiotics now. I am relieved and he can rest for a week or so. Thanks everyone!

Glad to hear everything is going to be fine.

You want to hear something funny? I came home last night and the dog devolped a limp in his left front leg. I couldn't see anything but a small lesion on the big pad of his foot. To much fur and no blood. Well he didn't get any sleep last night so I should be able to look a little better tonight when I get home. I dont know how those vets do it. I try to look and they are squrming around like a little kid. I take them to the vet and they just sit there.

Yeah, same with my cat.
He let the vet feel and squeeze his leg and just sat there quietly! He did hiss at the vet though when he got the shot of antibiotics. Now he has 11 days of antibiotics.

Save yourself a lot of $$$ in the long run and keep the cat indoors. Any outdoor cat I ever had always ended up getting in fights.

I live out in the sticks and my cat is pedigree'd from ferel parents. I kind of like the fact that I haven't had to clean a litter box in the 5 years I've had her. She is afraid of her own shadow. I've seen her do some remarkable things. I have no doubt she'll live to a ripe old age. Now the kitten is a throw away from animal control. He might have a problem with the great outdoors. He followed Kitty outside by mistake and got into to all types of trouble. Lets just say a white cat and a leaky rear main seal on the GN dont mix. He's going to be Dr.Evil,uh I mean Daddys lap cat until he can prove he needs to go outside.

Puppy is going to the vet as I write this. I think a snake or maybe a rodent or even insect might have bite him. I cant see chit through all the fur. I've been bitten by various insects over the years and woke up with numb joints before. I pray its just a sprained joint. He's like my wifes only child. Or she acts like it anyway.

Wish I didn't reply to this thread earlier. My Ragdoll cat was acting weird over Christmas including peeing on our bed:mad: . Ended up that she had a bladder infection. $450 spent on our $400 cat. Told my son he should become a vet! Don't think you have to worry about malpractice suits either.

Well, my cat is still limping.

Took him back to the same vet ....... You know, the one I paid to take and read the x-rays?
Here is his comment;
"Oh, it is broke, I can see it now (I have this NO $*** look on my face) Well, since it has been about 10 days looks like it started to heal by itself but it is not healing correctly. So what we need to do is re-break and pin it. .......... It will cost $500 down and total estimated $2500. You want to schedule the surgery" What a JACKA$$!!! So his new name is "gimp"
Just venting. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn! That sucks. My dog is still limping too. The wife took him in and they wouldn't even do an X-ray. Gave him some pills and a shot. Said if it doesn't get better than they'll do the X-ray. They are guessing its just a sprain. At worst some torn ligiments or some cartledge damage. Well he aint limping as bad. I dont know if he is just used to the pain or if he is really getting better. He runs like its no big deal. We used to make him sleep in his crate but we started letting him have free reign of the house at night now. He can be smart sometimes. I sometimes think he is playing us for suckers. He's always been a slow healer. Maybe all dogs are? The cat scratched him on the black part of his nose and it was almost a month before you couldn't see the gash anymore. The cat scratches me and you cant tell 3 or 4 days later.

Go to another vet! $2500 for a broken leg is crazy. All they do is put a splint on it. My dad made his splints out of 3/8 aluminum rods and tape. Cost a total of about $2.
