BNSF called me for an interview as a Way Welder and I was wondering if this type of work is something to retire from. I have been laid off too many times from machine shops and weld shops, so looking for something fresh.I have the experience to do the actual job, but looking for advancement also.

I have no experience with trains or the railroad.

Any info is appreciated.

Tom Shea is a conductor I think.. you might want to drop him a PM.

A friend of mine started out laying ties(spelling?), he worked his way up to conducter and now is an engineer. This is for BNSF. Spend alot of time on the road.

conductor here

The railroad is a social life destroying job but the pay and benefits seem to make it even out.
I was in the car business for 20 years before and this is the most relaxing and stressfree job compared to that.
Sure working 80 hours a week and nights sucks, but it sure beats some of the other options out there.
The railroads will NEVER go out of business and you job is safe thanks to the unions....
just my 2 cents..... its no parardise....but other than a dj in a stripclub
what is...........

My brother works for UPS and it has taken him 15yrs to finally get a route in trucking for them. Is this the same deal or can you advance quicker? I am looking for a quick advancing job too. I was a supervisor for 2 years and loved it.
