So I found the rattling noise that I would get if I rev'd the car in park and let off the throttle quickly - the converter bolts. They weren't loose per say, but on one of the bolts I could flex the flywheel away from the converter ever so slightly... so I thought no problem, i'll just bust out my 15mm wrench, hooked a 20 mm on the end for more leverage, tightened that sucker right down, and then I thought oh this is getting easy all of sudden and then that thought was quickly eclipsed with the - @#$%@# I am twisting the bolt head off!! and sure enough the split second as that thought was entering my head -- PING!!!! the wrenches let go and the head of the bolt head was lying on the ground!! SOB!!!

So, the problem wasn't so much the convertor bolts were loose, but i think they bottomed out in the converter, so I need to pick up some new bolts and perhaps some washers too...

Anyway, my question is...do you think the convertor bolts were compromised for me to be able to twist the head off? I was laying under the car, so even though i had two wrenches hooked together for leverage, I wasn't exactly in the best position to put all my force into...just kinda surpised i twisted a head off... now i suppose i have to pull the converter out to get the rest of the bolt out...booooo

If you bottom the bolt in the mounting holes you could have dimpled the cover on the converter. If so you may have lockup clutch problems. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

Thanks, I'll check that out, but it is a 10" converter, so if i recall correctly, the bolts would only bottom out on the tab that sticks out from the converter to bolt to the flywheel... I will check to make sure however...

thanks,
Nate
