hello, i'm strongly considering buying a used pt-54. however, it is being sold without the exhaust elbow (where it connects to the downpipe), and the seller says it just uses the stock turbo's elbow. are there any problems with this? any performance differences between a stock elbow and an aftermarket one that would come with something like a pt-54? lemme know, i'm about to send this guy money!

Wont be as happy?

Good question, a friend locally JUST got his TR rebuilt with a LOT of goodies and a brand new PT-54. But to my suprise found he retained the stock 90'degree elbow. Even saw he fabricated a neat near 3"inch down pipe. Dont know what the latest go fast word is on that restrictive elbow, so I cant say completely negative...BUT I can be confident that 620HP turbo would be happier with a 3" Terry Houston Downpipe or equivelant. More Air IN means you'd want to let that air OUT just as fast, yes? HTH

Nobody sells turbos with exhaust elbows.

Make sure it has an exhaust housing and find out what type it is A/R number and make, Garrett, PTE, etc.

Elbows are part of the exhaust system, exhaust housings are part of the turbo itself.

And if you do find out information on the turbo exhaust housing make sure you find out what size wastegate hole is in it.

If it's been ported out for a larger downpipe puck, it may not work with the stock elbow and its smaller puck.

What all is done to your car? That turbo is going to SUCK if it's too stock. For starters, you will need at around a 3400 stall, 50lb injectors, etc.

it's going to be getting some 55lbers, a cam, 3000 stall TC, a qboost boost controller, and DRs. I figure that will be enough to get that thing spooled.

i got the pt54 and the stock exhaust elbow is a really bad fit. i'm sure it would suck performance-wise to use it. damn, i didn't know downpipes were so freakin expensive! $400-something for a piece of pipe with flanges and a wastegate flapper? wth? Maybe i can get my guy at the exhaust shop to make me one a little more reasonably.

Just a few tips...
Get the 60lb injectors, with 55's you have to mod the ECM which is extra money. A 3000 stall will be REALLY laggy with a 54. I had a 3000 with a 51 and it was OK. You will need 3400. As long as it is a lock up, it shouldn't be a problem on the street.

Yes downpipes are expensive, especially since there are only a limited number of people making them these days.

Do you have any kind of a scan tool? Have you done any upgrades to the fuel system?

Gonna Be Tough To Substitute...

Its gonna be TOUGH to substitute a Performance mandrel bend STAINLESS WITH wastegate puck with an average joe exhaust shop pipe...YES it tends to be a lil pricey...but these cars are Worth it! besides...with something like a 3" Terry Houston downpipe you'll never have to worry about an upgrade to fit bigger turbos...unless u want 3.5's or 4"+ pipes! Just thought I'd add my rant in favor of not scrimping the money for a do-it yourself pipe when u can get a decent one. Hell, didnt POSTONS even come out with a 3" mandrel downpipe for like $189? Think G-bodyparts came out with a terry houston style downpipe too...dont remember their price. Once you start down the path to cutting corners, forever will it control your destiny...Consume you it will! :P. hth

FWIW I went 11.08 with a stock ported elbow and a ATR 2.5 downpipe. I was running a TE60 turbo.
